is this right or should i plumb another pipe back to the intake manifold and fit a pcv valve??

Nah thats fine, you could remove the filter and put a line back to the manifold with a PCV inlet but you don't have to.

Mines plumbed in like that mate, it's been fine for around a year. Occasional plumes of blue smoke but think that's something else.

Thats ok but only because your catchcan has a breather on top. They dont need vaccum because at idle theres not much blowby.
