engine temp going up and down and sometimes cold air heater

heya guys,

recently my car has been playing up in respect to the heater cold/hot and also my temp guage goes up and down .

this happens randomly,when the cars warm ,one minute the heater will work,then after a while it blows cold even though cars been running for 30 mins.

also the temp guage fluctuates between halfway and top of gauge and before its never done this.

started happening 3 days ago.

i am thinking its the thermostat as this is surely the only thing connecting these two problems ?

Yeah I would try the stat mate,and while your at it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to flush the matrix either.

Its really weird its happened suddenly,havent touched the car rad system or anything else for 2 months and its happened randomly.

Anybody else had this on the starlet or any other car .?

could be a sticky/faulty thermostat mate take it out and see if it moves freely without sticking shouldnt be too hard to move while its out may aswell change it i suppose at least i eliminates one problem if it doesnt actually fix it

was gunna say, stat, we've all had this id imagine haha can get them from local motorfactors or message iddy for a price
