Jwood91
could you clarify this for me a bit guys? I've now dropped this car in to a jap car specialist. They've done the welding (under sills as well so thats a load off my mind) They've actually said they can't see ANY blue smoke and sounded suprised to see this on the mot so looks like no issue there... They said they found an air leak in the exhaust which they thought was why it failed on emissions and have fixed that up expecting it to get through. They've then run it through an emissions test to check and its still failing.. They've told me they think they need to order a new cat in for it (£150 plus vat and labour) and that it should get through emissions after the new ones fitted.... am I blowing money away here? Thanks
Calum122
From what's been described above, 4EFTE WILL NOT show up on their records. Therefore it is a NON-CAT Test at 3% idle. If your car isn't passing those sorts of levels at idle then something is seriously wrong and you would want it checked out.
Jwood91
Thanks mate. looks like I need to give them a call in the morning as pretty sure they're putting it through the standard tests....
Jwood91
Soz to throw a spanner in the works but can i point you guys towards this? http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?p=537449 Looks to be saying because its first registered in japan post 95 it still needs the basic cat test Never thought I'd have this much trouble on this part of the MOT haha. why can't this stuff be black and white!! these cars should be exempt classics in my opinion anyway. buggers! Calum122
Yes that's also true, but as Nick pointed out, he contacted them and it's explicitly what I just described. They WILL NOT find the engine code 4efte in their reference manuals, therefore they cannot test it against UK regulations. As fair as the UK is concerned, that engine never made it to UK roads, therefore there is no test against it. They have to test it against the wider range which was just a non-cat test
Jwood91
Thanks mate you've helped me out loads on this one so far I appreciate the effort and will have a word with them
Calum122
Nick posted the diagram you need to show them. You need to ask them to test it against the engine code on the chassis which is 4efte which they won't find and therefore can't test against. It could be excessive emissions which is over 3% on idle. And if that's the case you will need to sort it out. Won't need a cat but will need sorting. It will say on the failure sheet what the emissions was. If they failed it with emissions less than 3% then you need to tell them they got it wrong.
akyakapotter
ask to talk to the tester before they start the mot and get him to get the book out they dont know about the non cat tests if they dont do many imports ill be doing it again when mine comes round in may. i have a sports cat i put in for my mot and it goes though easy. ill also be remind him he needs to road test the brakes due to aftermarket lsd so not allowed to put the car on the brake tester machines another one vosa told me when i called them year before last. they are very helpfull. cheers nick
