Thought I would get an update in here about the Competition Clutch...... My earlier post mentioned that there were some bad vibrations and resonance. Well this got really bad, like it was shaking the car to pieces, in particular at 2000-3000rpm. Took it back to the garage, and they told me to stop driving it straight away to prevent any unnecessary damage. I left it with them for investigation as they said it was all the signs of something being out of balance. (That is how it felt to me also). So it all came apart again, where it was found that there were considerable high/hot spots around approx. a third of the edge of the pressure plate... So defective clutch kit basically.... Which is a shame, as until that point the clutch was great, lightweight under foot, good bite etc... I didn't go for the same clutch again, as I had lost trust in it and the whole process has been rather expensive for me, and certainly didn't want this happening again! So, it now has an Exedy Organic fitted, with no issues or resonance at all... Very similar feel to the competition clutch - So far, so good!

Powerflex engine mounts, how stiff are they?
Sherb87 replied to Ep91 kid's topic in Chassis & Suspension
I have the yellows fitted in my EP82, lots of vibration at idle (mine is at about 700rpm, so it's quite shakey anyway). I use mine as a daily, and it is certainly 'liveable'... worth it for the gain with gear changes etc... No vibrations when driving really, just idle and low rpm. -
^All sorted now! It was the master cylinder like you say. Replaced the slave as well as it was cheap enough. Now everything is spot on, the clutch is perfect for my set up!
-
Cheers chaps, think I will just go with a cheapie... Looks like the 4E-FE and 4E-FTE share the same one so I should just be able to walk into a local motor factors and pick one up!
-
Do they share the same as UK non turbo then? Can never seem to get anything off eurocarparts.

So, update... I've currently got an issue with the clutch biting point if I am in traffic and using the clutch a lot. As I crawl through traffic, each time I bring the clutch up and depress, the bite gets closer to the floor each time, until it's on the floor and the car wants to move on its own. If I take it out of gear and release the clutch, the symptoms go away then start again from the top of the travel. Clutch has been bled, no air/bubbles present.... No leaks anywhere... Pedal freeplay at about 10mm... Next, I was thinking it could be a tired slave cylinder struggling with the new clutch? So I was going to do a complete fluid change with new slave... Any other suggestions welcome!! It's a shame as the clutch is awesome with general driving!

Hi All, Looking at a new clutch slave cylinder... You can get OEM spec part for £15 or a genuine part at £85... Obviously a big difference in cost, can anyone vouch for the OEM spec? I know a lot of things are best kept genuine, but that is a big difference if it will function just as well. Cheers!

First thoughts of the clutch are good, very light and easy to use... Nice in traffic etc... The only notable thing, might be an issue, but not really sure until the clutch is bedded in properly... Is there is quite a lot of vibration at low speed when in gear and driving... Nothing at all at higher speeds, like 40 plus. So I will give it a few miles yet and see how it goes!

After talking to a few chaps at JAE – the general feeling was that I should get an Exedy Organic Stage 1, due to not having massive amounts of power, or having any plans on having massive power. I heard a couple of people mention the competition clutch STG4 being shocking as a daily, so that put me off. Unfortunately upon ordering, the Exedy’s aren’t available for 2 months… I was offered the Stage 2 Competition Clutch as the closest alternative (Full plate, not paddle, sprung, meant to be good daily drive etc…) Also, the clutch I was originally interested in with this thread. Seems like there aren’t many people using these, maybe because it’s a bit of an ‘in between’ clutch? Or maybe people are using them but haven’t said anything about them online. I usually like to go for something based on reviews/feedback… But I am taking the gamble! (Excellent service from ID-Workz for the parts). I shall feedback on my thoughts when it is fitted… may be of use to others in a lower power range wanting something better than standard, but not over the top. Fingers crossed!

Not huge power, just sticking with the CT9 Hybrid set up.

http://www.nengun.com/orc/309-series-single-plate-clutch-300ps These seem to be popular! Not a bad price either. After researching them it appears there are two types, one of them being a reduced noise version. Does anyone know the part number for that?
-
Do they fit on the standard shocks and springs though? (Well, its KYB shocks and Tein springs)
-
That is certainly a start! Thanks! So the tops mounts are shared across the models? So a standard 1.3 (non GT/Glanza) top mount will do?
-
Hi All, Does anyone know where to get standard suspension top mounts from? (For my EP82 GT) I've spoke to ID-Workz who can't get them and I've had no luck with ICP... Found them advertised on a site called 'Burrows Toyota Parts', at £85 quid each, for the EP91, are they the same as the EP82? Didn't realise they were that expensive! Thought I would be able to refresh the standard parts for fairly cheap.... Instead I might just wait for some second hand coilies..... Cheers! Dan

I've seen a few good reviews about the stage 4. Are you using a standard flywheel?

Is anybody using the Stage 2 Competition Clutch? Just after some feedback if it's any good? (For a 4E-FTE) My clutch is slipping, so I need a new one and this one seems to be around my budget! http://id-workz.co.uk/toyota/starlet/starlet-glanza-ep91/drivetrain/competition-clutch-stage-2-4e-fte Also interested to hear of other options for around the £250-300 mark, that is good for daily use and handle moderate power, I would imagine my set up is about 180bhp. Cheers all!

I don't think it is sat long enough for it to be brakes and only does it when turning. I haven't checked the top mount and spring in terms of taking them apart, and couldn't really see anything wrong... I shall have a proper look!

Hi All, I have an odd clunk which sounds like it is coming from the drivers side front suspension.... But, it only does a single clunk, after the car has been stood. For example, when I turn out my drive and I get to almost full lock it does and single clunk and that's it, quite loud. Doesn't do it when driving and only does it after it has been sat a few hours. I've had it in the air and had pull on everything, turned the steering etc and can't replicate it. Has anyone had a similar thing?
-
It just has a nice low burble. Especially when warmed up. Still sounds nice! I needed ear plugs on idle when I first got it! Ha!! It was 280 for the cat-back. Reasonable though as that includes it coming down off the cat, into a flexi, then a mid silencer and then the rear silencer/tailpipe, complete 2.5" system. The beauty is, you can have it what size you like and whatever style tailpipe you want.
-
To be honest, it is very subtle in terms of the noise as well as how it looks. It does have a centre silencer as well, which I would probably take out next time around to give it a louder sound. As it's probably a little too quiet if anything. Still burbles, has a low tone and pops a bit though. It still sounds lovely, just not as loud as people expect a Starlet to be!

A full set of Powerflex engine mounts were fitted today... The difference is amazing, everything feels so solid and smooth. Gear changes are much more precise/ positive. Reading about the Powerflex bushes, I can see that some people aren't sure about them due to the hardness - with increased noise and vibration. In my opinion they aren't too bad, there is an increase, but it is definitely liveable, in my particular set up anyway. Main difference I have noticed is gearbox whine, which is quite prominent. There wasn't any before, so I assume it is related to the mounts! That's another job done anyway! :-)

Ah I see, that makes sense! Cheers for that dude.

Evening! I was searching though the old receipts which came with the car and found one for when the clutch was fitted. The receipt states that a paddle clutch was fitted as well as the flywheel being machined. Is this a common thing? I am trying to understand why they would have machined the flywheel, I guess it will be due to the fitment of the clutch or for lightening purposes? Curious as it may have an impact on whatever clutch I go for next? (If some require machining of the flywheel and some don't...) Cheers!

It's been a while since I posted... Nothing new to report really other than I've just been looking after and maintaining the car. I put some new disks and EBC Yellowstuff pads on the front at the weekend, feels a hell of a lot nicer when braking now. Noticeable upgrade over the standard pads which were on it. It's still going strong, and sailed through an MOT today. I have some plans coming up... I've just ordered a set of Poly engine mounts as I noticed my standard ones are fairly deteriorated, which will probably explain the bit of movement/juddering I can feel when shifting. That should give a nice positive feel when they are in. Other plans are coilovers, decat, hard intake pipe and various poly suspension bushes.
