  1. the roof earth is not to be ruled out at all,

in fact its nearly definatley this.......i fitted up some additions to interior lighting and had to do some wiring to the middle toplight in the starlet and the earth was fucking awful and only just worked.they get moisture and corroded slightly and make for a very very poor earth in my case.

do check it,the screw that holds the light in is an earth for a start.this needs cleaning the other screw isnt an earth,

then the bad bit was the plug going into the unit, this was correded and chrome plating on connections was rusty and totally shot (had to scrape away the flaked chrome/plating just to get any sort of connection)

bet you this willbe ure issue !!

So do you think roof interior light isn't working because of the earth? That's fine I will check that just to be sure. Do you know what the box is down in the drivers footwell where the leads seem to go from the door sensors? Is this the central locking unit? I found a earth down in there that was pretty rough but could only clean it up a bit.

The clock also resets its time everytime I get into the car and the backlight in it is very very faint.

  2. One suggestion, for more of a warning indicator you should display the bars in the normal and safe temp/pressure range smaller and the unsafe range bigger. So you really see when it's critical. Also maybe fit some LEDs for this and a little beeper. So the LED lights up when any temp is too high or oil pressure too low, maybe a LED for both oil parts and one for water or one for both temps and one for oil pressure. Also the beeper if something substatial is wrong, way too high boost or way too low oil pressure for example.

Also an automaric switching of screens if something goes over or under a specified threshold so with one look at the screen you see what exactly it is.

Personnally I would program this warnings but have the screen simply in place of the original clock in the middle and showing the time, so I have the temp etc in gauges but when the arduino detects something wrong I don't have to skim through gauges but have it on the screen for faster reaction (switching of engine or simply driving slower).

Unfortunately I have no idea how to programm an arduino, otherwise I'd help you. But it would be nice if you upload your finished config when you're done, or maybe even "betas" when you have one thing ready, so others can use it and maybe suggest a thing or two you wouldn't have thoughr about. If you are working steady on it you could even charge like one or two £ for your work via PayPal to account for your time put into it.

Edit: not charge but have a little donation button for it. This is used in the xda-developers forum for the ones that build custom ROMs etc for android devices, as it is timeconsuming and many like to pay a bit for work they like or find useful. Me too for yours for example ifI build the same thing.

That is always a option to set the bar a bit higher its no more of a hassle to be honest, but the limit is going to be the sensors at the minute. The oil pressure and fuel pressure just goes up to 80psi but suppose too high isnt overly a bad thing either. Boost pressure only goes up to 36psi iirc but it should never be that high but it gives plenty of extra room for the bar to go up to at the end.

Im not really sure how the whole thing is going to work at the minute but id say your idea of it flicking screen to the one that is out of threshold is a good idea and will be pretty simple to implement. I recon with this between the screen changing colour and a loud beeper I would like to think I would be able to realise there is a problem quicker than having a mass amount of gauges infront of my face and trying to monitor them all at once.

And finally making money out of it would be great as everyone loves making money lol but I wont be forcing people to pay, I will maybe put my paypal link at the top or something, thanks for the idea. Each stage will be uploaded at most likely a video of it working so as people can recommend changes to make it better. I will be spending alot of time on it but I have alot coming up in November so i'm not sure if itl be finished any time this year. But then again its just waiting on sensors/boards thats holding me back the most at the minute.

    Thanks for your input

  3. The wiring is pretty easy, can be fiddly though I always used an external board to make things easier to see and wire up, tends to get messy on the Arduino itself as soon as you have about 5 wires on the pins.

The C langauge is very easy to pick up, I made up my own code for a few things before, I'll have to see if I've still got it laying around somewhere.

Aye I've got that starter kit so it should help get it setup outside the car then If it goes I will get it put onto a more permanent board.

Had a quick look at it there earlier and its handy enough by the looks of it. I will keep this thread updated with whatever code I write so as people can either copy it or give me some pointers on it.

Played with aduinos and writing stuff to them in uni last year, interesting project this!

Heres how the boost gauge is going to look while it is running, hopefully lol

  4. So I have started a new little project where i'm going to replace the standard dash clock with a small screen that will display information about the engine eg fuel pressure, boost pressure, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure etc but if it all works out i'm going to update it to maybe work as at wideband, boost controller and hopefully a wee motor to adjust the stiffness of the coilover.

I started a new thread for it because I feel it will be helpful to other people who might want to copy it and like me dont want alot of gauges about the car.

    Arduino Engine Monitoring System

  5. I've used these kits before and they are very good for the money. If you need a hand with anything drop me a pm and I'll have to rattle my brain lol.

Sounds good, I will most likely be coming to you as Im not too good with the whole wiring side of things. Im completely new to this whole thing. I do a bit of coding but not in C++ so it will also be a challenge. But i'm looking forward to it, this plan is to fit it to replace the standard clock.k.

  6. So the plan for the screen is a layout like this,

This is the oil Screen, it will include the oil temp and pressure. It will also have a bar at the bottom which will change following the oil pressure which will be easier to read than the number changing.

    __________________________

    | Oil temp 90C pressure 3.1 bar |

    | |

    |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| |

    |_________________________|

The next will be water, this will display the temperature of the water aswell it will also include the bar at the bottom so as it acts as a guage.

    ___________________________

    | Water temp 70C |

    | |

    ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| |

    |___________________________|

The next will be boost, this will have the boost pressure in psi at the top and a bar at the bottom that goes up and down according to boost.

Once the car is at full vacuum the bar at the bottom wont be there as the psi level increases the bar will fill towards the right. I feel this will be easier to read than trying to watch a number change. The bar will be fully filled across the screen at 20 psi which is just under 1.5bar. My car is only boosting 1bar at the minute so this will provide a bit of a warning.

    ____________________________

    | Boost 5psi |

    | |

    |||||||||||||||||||||||||||| |

    |___________________________|

They are a bit hard to imagine what they will look like but its the only way I can describe it at the minute.

I think Im going to set the screen to be green to match in with the dash in a glanza but for some warning I plan to be able to change the screen colour to red if anything is outside a boundary eg boost pressure is over 1.3bar, water temp is over 99c etc. A buzzer will also sound to make sure I notice something is wrong but hopefully will never need to use this function but will be a good alert.

  7. So far I have bought two 80 psi pressure sensors, I hope to use these for fuel and oil pressure. I just hope that they work because they are £20 a sensor. I thought 80 psi was enough as oil and fuel pressure shouldn't really be going over 5.5 bar.

I have also bought a 20-240 kpa Pressure sensor, this will give me a range from -11.8 to 21.3 psi when you factor in atmospheric pressure.

For the arduino I bought a starter kit at £40 which included the screen, buttons, resistors etc but I have decided to go for the Mega 2560 to control the whole thing.

I have also got the idea of been able to control the coilovers with this aswell so as stiffness is able to be adjusted from inside the car.

  8. I am going to create a wee project where I will be able to monitor how the engine is running.

I am going to be monitoring at the minute, boost pressure, fuel pressure, oil pressure, oil temp and water temp.

This is all going to be displayed on a small screen with a button to be able to flick over to another screen to see a different pressure. Just thought I would update this here as it may be useful to some people who are looking to monitor all this information in one place without having piles of gauges all over the car.

I have seen some DIY's about fitting a wide band so this will be on the cards if it all works.

Bare in mind that I currently have completely no knowledge about these things at all and will be trying to put it together based on tutorials from the net.

So expect some updates to this over the next few weeks as it has only been ordered today.

So just to cap over what I've spent and have got:

    Oil And Water Temp Sensors x 2 + p&p = 15

    Water Hose Adapter 28mm x 1 + p&p = 7

    80Psi Pressure Sensor x2 + p&p = 40

    20-250Kpa Pressure Sensor x1 + p&p = 20

    Arduino Mega 2560 Style Board x1 + p&p = 14

Arduino Starter Kit x1 + p&p = 45 (Could of been a lot cheaper if I just bought a screen separate)

    Total : 141

I have to get a couple of wee adapters now that will allow me to fit the oil temp and pressure sensors. For the sake of it I might just buy a sandwich plate to save any hassle.

  9. I would say earth somewhere if all the permanent lives are playing up, i might be wrong and im sure someone will correct me if i am, is that all the permanent lives are connected

The roof light earth is on just the chassis so that rules that one out.

Id be happy to strip the dash and whatever if somebody give me a idea where and what to look for but i dont really have a clue at the minute

  10. Few questions here,

    1. Currently the backlight in my clock doesnt work but you can still see the time some times when there is light on it, is that just a matter of replacing the clock?

    2. The sensor for sensing the door is opened doesnt seem to work as the light on the dash doesnt come on, I took apart the sensor and fixed it but doesnt seem to make any difference. I dont know if im measuring it right but im getting roughly 0.3v on the red wire running towards this, any idea's?

    3. The light on the roof doesnt seem to work either, from what I gather the two wires on the roof going to the light are a permanent live and the other is switched for when the door is opened. Maybe im wrong but, im not too good with electrics. Again from what I can gather the two wires have 0.3v going to them at all times.

    4. Lastly the permanent live that goes to the radio wasnt working so I had to take one from the hazard lights.

Fuses seem good, But have you any ideas whats going on?

    Thanks

  11. Sorry for all the pictures and what use is a progress thread without pictures, also today I was pricing up a livesports spoiler, livesports wings and a varis bumper. I think I will be buying these in the future as they would completely change the look of the car.

Decided to go for some bonnet raisers in 23mm in a silver colour because simply red was too dear lol

    DSC_0124_zpsd221546c.jpg

Also seen in another thread that they removed the matting under the bonnet scoop so decided to do that aswell, need to give the whole engine bay a real good clean but I will probably leave that to winter.

  12. Heat wrap it or high temperature spray?

I never even thought about wrap to be honest, I must get a look at it to see if it would be possible.

im with socks, VERY interested in seein the capability of it! never heard of that 1 before, must be super rare!

That must be mega rare that ecu love it!

Yeah I will post up the final rolling road print outs once I get them done, Hopefully should be able to get a good steady result from it

hey karl..nice build. you can try some high temp paint on the manifold..or...get it coated (prefer this). coating will never come off..so its the better option..but more costly.

That sounds more appealing to be honest, along with looking good it will help heat disperse if I'm thinking about the same thing.

    Thanks

  13. Looks nice, a front splitter would finish the front end of nicely

Yeah that's the plan to smooth the front bumper out and get a front lip, I think I'm going to go for a livesports spoiler aswell.

Im fascinated to see that ECU.... Its also very interesting to see that the fueling can be adjusted!

Yeah I will try get up a few readings from the rolling road once its set up properly again. Any tips on how to get the mani looking a bit better since all the paint has came off it

looking well ladd and good modifications done to car say it goes good atm

Hopefully I will get a few more wee things done soon, thanks :)

    Timeline

    Ep3 Seats Fitted

Bonnet Raisers and Bonnet Matting Removed

    Arduino Engine Monitoring System

    Livesports Spoiler and Wings

Got this completely standard other than the buddy clubs and a set of lowering springs. This is how it looked.once I got it.

    DSC_0020_zps277de839.jpg

First thing I done was remove the plate and got a wee jap one on which helped I think. Also tinted the fog lights later.

    DSC_0102_zps533ff314.jpg

After that I got used to the power of a standard car and decided I wanted more.

I went and picked up a new Wepr mani and downpipe, td04L turbo and a external wastegate setup. Mani just doesnt look as nice now the paint is off but if anyone has any tips let me know. Also added a few wee red vacuum pipes to add a bit of colour but they need alot of tiding.

    DSC_0103_zps3469ff4e.jpg

This is being controlled by a pnp Dorf R ECU. Went to get it setup on the rolling road and found it has bother fueling after 1 bar so we decided to have a look inside and found 6 points of adjustment.

These seem have controls for when the tps is closed, open etc but I need to get a better look at that.

    DSC_0089_zps6a9390b6.jpg

    DSC_0109_zps18ede90a.jpg

Got myself a new key, cant seem to get this to work but I will get a look at this some other day to make sure there is power running to the reciever etc.

    DSC_0084_zps2d9b0e7a.jpg

    New plug leads

    DSC_0106_zps7a437f14.jpg

Sorry its a bit messy at the minute but I will tidy up the thread and my bay soon lol

    Plans to do now is:

get it set up correctly with a new rrfpr since that one is just a cheap one.

Fit the new Ep3 civic front seats i bought from alex of the site.

    Fit a trd gear knob

Fit the K-Sport coilovers I bought for it

Paint the rocker cover, maybe matt black is nice I think but my theme was planning for red. but things have changed slightly

    Then just enjoy it :)

  15. EP love runs in families over here bud! she'll be well cared for if she came from Steve.

no he has no threads or posts on any of the EP forums that I'm aware of, he just tinkers away under the radar. That's why he's known as Secret Steve lol.

    Phil.

Yeah it was him that got me hooked in them pressuring me into steering away from diesels lol

Does anybody know a rough spec of his car or what? I mind the last time he was saying it was 380bhp and lifting the head at that stage. Since then its been stripped for a rebuild but that was 4/5 years ago it was 380.

  16. you're up by the lair of one Secret Steve, thats why there's so many EPs up that neck of the woods, as Mr Steve dabbles in quite a few EPs.

    welcome aboard dude.

    Phil.

He would be a cousin of mine and that's who I bought this off. Is there a build thread to his car or anything?

    Thanks everyone :db:
