matthewmaw
Hello all, After much persuasion from Socks to start a progress blog, I've finally got round to making a start on one. I bought my Glanza on my birthday in October last year, from another club member just down the road from me in Gainsborough. I gave fairly strong money for it but it was a super clean car with a TD04 kit, some brand spanking new Meister-R's and fresh paint so it was a good base. It was mapped by Ricky at RT not so long ago and made 202bhp @ 0.8 bar so it felt pretty quick too. It had just had all new wheel bearings, new brakes amongst a load of other work, plus plenty of top tuning products were fitted that would save me a quid or too going forward. But there were also a few issues to address:The RT TD04 manifold was an older version, and had clearly seen some abuse (haven't they all) and it had cracked on two of the primaries and at the flange. This would need a replacement, along with the flexi section in the exhaust that had hit the deck and flattened it. One knackered manifold. So I spoke with Socks and Ricky at RT and I decided to take the plunge and just have them sort the lot out for me in one go: - TD04 Manifold - repair to exhaust flexi (this is one of their 2.5" systems)- fit and set up boost controller- mapping to 1.0bar approx. A couple of weeks later, it was done! Not a bad day out and it felt monumentally quick, the extra boost helps of course but I've no doubt that having a manfifold that's about to snap didn't help either, and whilst he was at it, Ricky found that the fuel filter was causing it to run slightly lean so he sorted that too. £1200 later and I had my car back and I was happy! However, he did find that my OEM LSD 'box is on its way out... Arse! The plan is to remove this and have it sorted locally as it still drives fine, he just said it was noisy through the det cans on the Dyno so it would benefit from a rebuild. I had a load of jobs to do on it anyway so it's up on stands in pieces for the time being...Updates as they happen, and when I actually have time to update lol. Cheers - Matt. matthewmaw
So picking up where I left off at the end of 2016, I have since had the car sat on axle stands ready for gearbox to come out but the weather and a holiday has fouled play. I did find time to do a few other jobs, mostly in the dark or rain or both! First up was to clean up and fit a brake kit I bought off Amjad - Celica calipers etc. Should make a good difference. Shame to remove the old brakes as they were practically brand new and super clean but I'll be needing the extra stopping power! After a good clean and a lick of paint, on they went And I started taking everything apart ready for box to come out and a few other little jobs too. One job I was desperate to do was the rocker cover as it was going beige and had about 10 layers of knackered powder coat on it. Not one for half arsing a job, I got Bim at Pugz Polishing in Retford to sort this for me Results speak for them selves! He also did some Evo VI wheels for my Swift Sport daily too but this left a few other items looking shabby so I thought I'd have a go at the easier stuff and it all came up ok TBH When I get another minute I'll post the rest of the updates. Time is a rare commodity in my world!!
Socks
You best stock up on some polish lad! Good progress with the car. Get that gearbox sorted and it will be ripping up the tarmac this summer! Keep us all posted
matthewmaw
Ok so another spare 10 mins to continue getting this thread up to date! One big problem with me and small cars is that I'm 6'4" so with the standard seats I look like a frog on a walnut!! In my Mk1 Golf I had some Corbeau Club Sports and got on really well with them, so I decided another pair would do the job. I bought some Bride rails off Charlie and bolted everything in. Rails fitted perfectly but I had to have the side mounts widened to accommodate the XL size Corbeau's as they're slightly wider than a Bride seat. Like a glove ☺The obligatory Cruise gear knob finished the job. I've still yet to find a steering wheel set up that will offer the right reach but without loads of flex so that's a future job. I've stripped everything out of the back and in total I'd say between 30-35kg has come out in total. Amazing how much plastic crap and heavy brackets go in to such a lightweight car!! I've still got a few more bits to update so I'll get on to those as and when I find time. I'm hoping to keep this up to date but this is from October 16 to present day. Other less exciting things to note (for my reference really) is a full engine service carried out the week before I took the car to RT including plugs and a JVC USB/Bluetooth stereo (that will be coming out shortly anyway!) Cheers - Matt
matthewmaw
Whilst it's half time I figured I'd post a few pics of the car I sold to get into a Glanza. I should mention that I live on Socks doorstep and I've spent far too many hours talking to him about how good these cars are and eventually I've bought one. But before this I built a 20VT'd Mk1 Golf: One with Sock's 2ZZ Glanza for good measure... as quick as my Mk1 was, this thing really is on another level. For those lucky enough to have had a ride in it, you'll know what I mean!! Just thought I'd give you an idea of what to expect from my Glanza in the coming months. In the meantime I've bought another house to do up so that has to take priority in the meantime but I'll still be cracking on as best as I can where time/money will allow. Cheers - Matt. matthewmaw
welcome to the forum mate im surprised its taken so long haha looking forward to the updates James I've been a forum member for quite some time but since buying my car in October I've not found the time or not remembered to start a build thread. You can thank Socks for kicking my arse into gear

matthewmaw
Love your ep mate but I would have struggled to have parted with that v dub lol 😘The simple fact is that it was TOO clean and TOO good to actually use. I couldn't leave it anywhere and every time I drove it I was on egg shells in case I damaged it.In the end I was offered strong money for it and I couldn't help but let it go. Plus my Glanza came up for sale about a week before mine sold so I just figured it was meant to be 😂Sold Mk1 on my birthday, two hours later I drove the Glanza home! matthewmaw
So I finally got round to getting the gearbox out this weekend after Socks practically bullying me into it and some help from one of the best mechanics I've ever met!! From start to finish it took him just 45mins to remove all the ancillaries and then remove the box (including a mid-job brew break) so god knows what's taken me so long 🙄 Anyway box is now out, that'll be off for a rebuild at some point this coming week and I'll find out what's been causing the grinding and sticking in gear I've had. How it sits now. Ill be doing a load of other assorted jobs whilst it's out, like cleaning up 20 years of grime and sh*t. Whilst I was at it, my brother-in-law had some old wheels sat in his garage that I blagged for nothing and they'll do as spares so I don't have to run semi slicks all the time. I'll get these cleaned up and powder coated and they'll do the trick nicely. Updates as they happen - Matt.
matthewmaw
Not much to update but the weather is ok so I did a few little jobs today as and when I got chance. This one is more for reference than anything else but now the box is off I can clearly see that it's recently had a Fidanza lightened flywheel (Socks sold the previous owner this) and also it has a Comp Clutch Stage 4 clutch kit which looks to be in great health. (171,074) Apart from that, I've recently bought a set of gauges, nothing flash, just some electrical gauges so I can monitor oil temp, pressure and water temp as a back up. I've already got a HKS boost gauge and my EBC shows boost pressure also. I had a 3 gauge din panel left over from my Mk1 that I never used so figured I'd ditch the stereo and slot them in the centre console. Fit neatly so far, time to test out where they'll work best. I reckon this looks better but turns out that I can't get the gauge panel to stay there due to the mountings so it'll have to go on the bottom but the next issue is that the accessory pocket won't mount in the upper position 🙄 Back to the drawing board for now. glanzanut22
Looking good mate, bit of savy and I reckon you could fit those gauges in the top din 👍😜
jiggaman_16
Those Dragon gauges or watever is marked on them are pretty crap. The lights in one of mine went out from day one. The lights in the other went after a while. Real nice setup tho. In the VW, is there a benefit of mounting the oil cooler in the engine bay apart from probably a shorter hose routing? In the VW, is there a benefit of mounting the oil cooler in the engine bay apart from probably a shorter hose routing?Haha well spotted! The short answer is that Mk1's aren't built for Turbos/intercoolers/60mm alloy rads and so it was the only place we could put it. What you can't see is the huge gap beneath it between the chassis leg and inner wing and so it had more than enough air flow, plus I typically ran it with no grill and so we curved the intercooler end tank and angled the air filter so that you could actually see it from the front: direct air flow 🙂Think this angle kinda shows what I mean. Either way, it worked a treat, I had a thermostatic sandwich plate set at 80 degrees and it rarely saw triple figures, even under hard use 🙂👍🏻 Cheers - Matt

For what I gave for them, if they last a month I'll be satisfied. The long term plan is to replace all the gauges with Defi but I've got bigger jobs to do first. matthewmaw
Another quick update, not a great deal to report really.Managed to find time to drop my spare wheels of with Bim at Pugz Polishing for refinishing and he's done a top job of them! BeforeDuringThe finished product. Decided to go with white to match my Rotas. These will be fitted with Hankook V12 Evo tyres whilst the Rotas will be fitted with a set of Avon ZZRs which are a Road legal semi-slick tyre. Both sets were kindly supplied by Rob Boston Racing in Gainsborough, a team I have been working with recently, assisting them in the day-to-day running of the business allowing them to concentrate on what they do best - winning! (Shameless plug there 😂) Rob has also agreed to perform a full geo set-up and corner weight my car for me too once it's all back together which a massive help, especially with the knowledge and experience they have in this field. Updates as they happen!
matthewmaw
Another quick update, no exciting pics or anything but after two weeks I finally heard from the gearbox specialist (even then I had to ring them 🙄) and the result is that 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th synchros are all goosed, also the dog ring on 2nd gear is damaged too which apparently has led to further damage meaning basically, I need a new second gear. Synchros are £145 inc vat for all four from Toyota so that's not too bad but 2nd gear with dog ring is just shy of £300!!! Yesterday I was down at Donington Park and Socks kindly spotted a gearbox for sale on my way home at Ilkeston which I picked up for £35 - advertised as crunching but worth a gamble for £35 so I picked it up and I'll strip it down tonight and see if I can salvage 2nd gear from it - fingers crossed it's ok 😬 🤞 Updates as they happen! Cheers - Matt
matthewmaw
...and I'm back! Not much to report in the past month or so but then not much has happened, plus I've been busy with the house I'm renovating which is coming along nicely. One thing I have found is the Toyota Sprint Series! I went along for the first round at Blyton and it seems right up my street and so pending my car actually being completed at some point, I think I'll enter a couple of rounds and see how I fair! With this in mind, I figured I'd lose some extra weight and totally stripped the interior. I've kept everything just in case I ever need to re-fit any of it but essentially it's looking like my once clean and tidy Glanza is becoming a little race car! Carpets removed Seats back inHeadlining has gone too, as have all the rear trims and I've recently added a 4 point Harness as well just to tie me in a bit better. TSS regs state that I don't need a roll cage due to the fact that it's sprinting, there's only ever one car out at a time although I'm still considering a cage for obvious reasons, plus it makes it eligible for other series etc. I dread to think how loud it's going to be in there 😂In other news, my gearbox was going to cost over £700 to repair so I've managed to source another OEM lsd box which should be on its way to my shortly - it'll be back on the road soon!!!!I'm just hoping that nothing has mysteriously broken or seized whilst it's been on axle stands for the past 4 months!! Cheers - Matt
matthewmaw
We have updates! My gearbox arrived last week and I got round to fitting it with the help of some friends. Not finished yet so I'll get round to finishing it off this coming week - fingers crossed it's a good'un as I've taken a gamble and sourced a used box. Really looking forward to hearing it run again, let alone drive the bloody thing! Also I collected a full set of ZZRs from Rob Boston earlier in the week so I'll get these fitted too - looking forward to seeing what sort of difference these make. Speaking of Rob Boston, he's kindly agreed to take my car in and do some prep work for me and then do a full corner weight/geo set up which should help massively as last time I drove it, it handled like an absolute nail!! More as it happens!
matthewmaw
Another update: ITS DONE!!! In between house renovations, 4-day stag do in Benidorm and work I managed to find enough time to piece it all back together and I even drove it, admittedly not very far but a lap of the village is enough so far to convince me that it's ready for MOT prep etc Excuse the odd wheels, they were the first pair I had to hand. Since these were taken I've fitted my ZZRs to the Rotas and put them on the car, re-bled my brakes and found that my NSR handbrake mechanism isn't working very well so I may have to strip and rebuild the caliper before MOT. Next up is a full nut & bolt check, some wiring to tidy up, gauges to wire in and engine and gearbox oil changes before sending it off for a test! After spending a day at Blyton with Socks in his GT, we found that his oil temps were getting scary high after 5 fast laps so an oil cooler is high on my list of priorities, just need to source the parts that will allow me to fit one neatly. After that it'll be off to Rob Boston Racing for some wiring, set up and geo work and they've also agreed to fit my cage for me so I need to pull my finger out and order a safety devices cage! More as it happens 👍🏻
jimmymac101
Nice update man! Get ordering that cage! My freind ordered one for his fiesta and it took almost 9weeks to get delivered 😂 James Edited May 27, 2017 by jimmymac101
matthewmaw
Ok it's been a small eternity since I updated this so here goes: I'd love to say that I've got a whole load of fancy bits but that really isn't my thing so it's a bit dull. Firstly, after sorting a whole load of bits like oil etc I got it booked in for MOT with help from Socks. First, I gave it a bath to make it presentable, call me old fashioned but I can't stand taking a car off for text covered in sh*t. So much so I even cleaned inside the arches Then off we went, fun drive over the Lincs wolds but hampered by high ambient temps and a weird misfire in the higher boost setting which I'll need to look into The good news is that it passed first go with just an advisory on the NSR handbrake being weak - winning! 😄I've also placed an order for a cage, just waiting for it to show up now but that gives me plenty of time to get other bits done. ZZRs fitted now 😎In the meantime, I've picked up a couple of oil leaks so I've just spent a small fortune on genuine gaskets, mega expensive oils for both engine and gearbox and hopefully I've managed to source a compete Greddy/GREX oil cooler kit with filter relocation after Socks inspired me with his 🙄 Once this little lot is done, I'm gonna treat the ord lass to a set of BYC splitter mounts and a front splitter along with a few other touches. Rob Boston has identified a slot in August that I can have to get it into their workshop for some proper set up work! (Cheeky Ginetta G55 group shot just because...)Once again, apologies for the lack of Cruise/ZEP/Varis blah blah but I'm really not interested in any of this sort of stuff 😂 It'll take time due to other commitments but this will be a quick little car once I've finished with it. In the meantime, I'm gonna go drive it, I've missed boost!! Cheers - Matt
