Current Civic EG owner but wants to go astray..

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I'm new to the site as you will probably see, and I don't know much about the Starlet/Glanza so I'm here to read and learn and get some advice on what I am looking for.. I currently own a Honda Civic EG thats been stripped and modded for a track day car, but after seeing one on track and reading some about how good the Starlet/Glanza is I'm tempted to sell up the Civic and get one of these, as its been a very love hate relationship with TenCho (the Civic).. I think I've had my fun with VTEC and want to go turbo as I think thats where my heart truely is, and I believe insurance won't be much different to the Civic anyway as I'm with a specialist who caters for modded cars, and I can never leave any of my cars standard..

I hope to be a sponge and absorb any advice and also provide any knowledge of my own to help others whilst I am here, and I can imagine I'll be here for a long while lol.. I'm hoping to do some homework before I dive in, but it seems like I am set on getting a Starlet/Glanza just because they are so understated! As I say I am in no rush to get one but wait until one comes along with some of the mods done already and also owned by an enthusiast who knows what they are doing and has loved the car as much as I will.

Thanks in advance to any welcome messages and advice given.

Albert.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I've not had a sit in a Starlet Turbo yet, so hoping there will be a midland/Birmingham sort of area meet and maybe I can have someone kind enough to let me feel what the Starlet feels like.

I'll upload/link some pics when I get home eventually tonight so you can see what a geek I look like and what I currently drive..

But here is the Civic out at Castle Combe at Performance Car Show Action Day in April:

I'll get some of me and the Yellow Mazda 6 "practical" car as well.. and I'm sooo tempted to get a Yellow Starlet, especially after seeing Idrees's one!! Yellow with Carbon fibre is soo JDM, and since I'm Chinese it defo clicks with my skin colour too ;) ;)

As you will see later tonight I've attempted the yellow black theme with the Mazda and it defo works!

I wouldn't say I'm going to the dark side, just broadening my horizons lol.. and yes usually the first things I do when I get a car is fettle with the handling department.. when I got the Civic 2 years ago it was only a little 1.5 litre SOHC, so could only produce 90BHP, but even so I braces the front upper, lower and rear upper lower, shocks and springs, anti roll bars, and "Prelude" big brake upgrade and rear disc conversion.. over kill for a 1.5 but at least I then knew what the handling was like before around Christmas just gone I put in the 1.6 DOHC VTEC engine..

Is there such transferable bits for the Starlet/Glanza, like fitting bigger brakes from another Toyota model and such things.. The reason why I went for the Civic back then was because most of hte stuff from an Integra Type R DC2 and some other models will happily install and uprate the Civic.. would be nice if thats available so I can get bits that will improve the car for cheap!

Thanks guys!! And sorry making you guys read my life story like this.. but thought it would be nice for everyone to know abit about my background and hopefully I can be a regular on here and make some new friends :p

Celica GT4 brakes will fit witha little modding and also ZEP do a R32 GTR kit which fits the Starlet I believe :p

Check the ToyTuning section to see all the mods available ;)

Nice Civic by the way ;)

Thanks for the welcome guys!! And I've having to do loads of homework!! But the Starlet definitely has loads of potential, no doubt about that!! The GF isn't too sure about the look as she feels the Civic is sleeker and lower where as the EP91 is more boxy.. but I love how understated these things are!! 1.3 for fuel economy and a feather right foot or some kick ass turbo performance when planted.. just need to figure out how to get rid of the Civic and if my current insurance company is willing to let me transfer the policy onto a EP91 with mods..

Nice to know there are fellow Chinese on here ;) Can't believe I am still awake scrolling around and reading.. I'm slowly forming what I think would be ideal for me.. something with LSD, has some mods done to the handling side of things, engine not all that important.. and if it can be yellow all the better ;) was that a factory available colour?

Doh.. thats a re-spray then.. I was getting excited ;) nevermind.. yeah I might as well wait for a fresh import to come over and through someone who knows what these things are and what to look for before handing it over to me.. ;)

What size are the standard brakes and after the brake upgrades? As mine started off life for the Civic as 242mm and now they are 282mm and just fit under those Advan alloys.. but ideally I really want to keep the Advans.. they were a hard find at a decent price for what they are.. I take it the PCD is 4X100? Also I'm guessing after upgrading the brakes the ABS needs to be disabled cause the ABS program running won't be able to cope with the increased stopping power and release the caliper even though you know its got more to give?

Also I take it if I import directly from JDM land the importer will charge me more than one thats already been in the country >_<

Your civic wheels will fly on mate ;)

More good news for me ;) Going to have to think how many things I can salvage from the Civic and take it over onto the future EP91! Spent most of last night selling teh idea that its a good move to do this.. but its going to be time consuming in the sense I will need to break the Civic for parts to get enough funds raised to get a little EP91.. I guess driving a turbo will be totally different to a N/A.. back to square 1 for learning to drive for me again >_<

If its intended for track use, your civic will be a far more usable and cheaper weapon. you will be able to get as much power as you can afford out of the starlet, but anyone in the know will tell you that the civic will ALWAYS be a better track car, end of. the chassis is just so much better and ideally suited to track, unlike the starlet, which will need a fortune spent on it to even come close to a civic round the twisties.

Some people will say that putting a rear arb on will turn it into an F1 car, but trust, it wont. If your civic is well sorted in the suspension department already (sounds like it is, didnt read your posts fully though) then the starlet will feel like a downgrade if you stick it in a corner, it'll probably terrify you with understeer then kick you in the ass with oversteer whilst you scream in terror. Something along those lines anyways ;)

Welcome to the club anyways bud.

ill have to second that.

youll never get a glanza/GT handling like a civic that has had some work done. no matter how many roll bars you fit.

youll get the starlet gonig faster in straight lines. but in corners it will fall short of what you are used to.

so it all boild down to what you want, straight line speed or cornering ability.

i agree with what you guys are saying ultimately but your making it out that starlets are shit, alot of people use them as track day tools, and a sorted glanza could easily keep with/rape a civic on a track,

:D Oh dear.. I am a twisties man me.. as I like the challenge of corners.. Yes I have fettled quite abit with the handling front with the Civic, but the annoying thing is no power until I hit VTEC.. where as with Turbo cars they are more foot down little lag and then chug chug along.. I was originally hoping the Glanza being leight weight would make twisties easier.. I'm used to major understeering cause the Civ doesn't have LSD.. hmm.. this has just broken my heart :D:p

I'll defo need to do some more homework and see how much work is required to get the Glanza up to spec, as I remember JapFest 2 back in 06 at Donny there was a EP91 that was very very quick, it was happily playing with RX7s, Skylines and that calibre of motor, but at that time I was a Honda fan so stuck to it and that inspired me to get the Civic a couple of months on, but that memory still stays with me hence why I am now here :D

Thanks for the words of advice guys! Its something I really do appreciate!!
