BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 After taking off the cam cover i soon noticed 2 of my cams have chips along the edge of the lobe, going around 2mm onto the face.my question is, how 'easy' is it to replace a cam.im thinking the hard bit is actually compressing the valve springs in order to get the cam in possition. How would i time it up also?anyhelp appreciated.mitch Quote
StarletRick Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 replacing cams takes about 15 mins. its as simple as undoing the fasteners putting new ones in and doing them back up. i have some spare cams if you want to buy some. Quote
RobSR Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 ^ your meant to torque the caps/fasteners down in a specific order tho i suspect...or did you do it the TC way rick...i.e do em up in any order Quote
SiCaln Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 oh hes pro, he helped me get it done in only a few mins the correct way Quote
StarletRick Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 specific torque? no. just do them up FT ^^ Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 what about getting the cams on the right cycle is that an issue?Id be interested in the cams rick as mine are abit shot. also what about setting the gaps as mines ticking a little at the moment, do i have to use shims? Im only familiar with rockers, not cams. Thanks lads!i love forums Oh and heres another question, where the fuck do i get a haynes manual for it!cant find one anywhere.i need torque settings fitted the front shocks etc without them :/ Quote
SiCaln Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 you will never find a haynes manual for our cars they were never made, you mayb able to find one for the 4efe Corolla which has the same engine Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 so is it not possible to find the settings for the car?i guess i could get the corrolla manual and apply its torque settings to the starbo(not just for the engine). Id hate to over/under tighten somthing. Quote
SiCaln Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 if u do it as tight as u can u still wont be overtightening it Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 potentially stretch the bolt? How much for the cams rick? Quote
Rich Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Theres a manual for 5E in the parts and numbers section, it has tourque setting at the bottom. Quote
StarletRick Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 i have a manual at home, ill dig them out. but. you just do them up tight. as for the timing. theres a little mark on the 2 spider gears that you line up. very very simple. Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 27, 2008 Author Posted November 27, 2008 cheers!are there any aftermarket cams available for the 4efe?How much are you looking for yours rick Quote
SiCaln Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 well Cruise and JAM did cams for the 4e-fte engine but they can be used on yours, but wouldnt make much difference or you can get billet ones made from Dave Burwash Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 27, 2008 Author Posted November 27, 2008 Billet, they must be expensive?i think il leave it and see how much Rick wants for his.thanks sicaln Quote
Asad Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Question.....how would the cams wear away? abuse? and what about the bits that "fell off" wouldnt they just cause more damage? Quote
Rich Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Probably mine looked the same as baz's last time I checked - Still running... Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 27, 2008 Author Posted November 27, 2008 Im not sure to be honest, over time there going to wear and i think that the heat doesnt help in the long term anyway. becoming brittle? god knows.they werent very large chips. i was just concerned as ive never seen anything like it.but thats re-assuring that rich's are still ok. perhaps this could be a popular problem with the 4efe? Quote
Rich Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Grannys not running them in propperly... Quote
Asad Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 lmao ^^ haha i bet some old lady called betty or margery had it before u ha! the old guy who had "bob" previously was called charles... Quote
StarletRick Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 the biggest cause of cam wear is no/poor quality oil. without decent lubrication, they literally smash themselves to pieces. Quote
Dave@TM-Developments.com Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Torque settings for the cam caps is a mere 13nm, so be careful and they should be tightened sequentially to avoid damage ;) Quote
BAZ2CRAZY Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 thanks for all the replys, certainly helped me.StarletRick? got those cams buddy?(pics up in a mo for my project thread) Quote
