Right then, a slight concern has risen while the engine was getting the once over.

I found some damage on the camshafts, yes both.

I'm no mechanic, but I know they aren't meant to be there.

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Never seen that before bud, its like the cams have been out before and they were dropped, or the rocker cover has been off and something like a tool has been accidentely dropped on it.

It doesnt look good anyway but cant see how deep it is,

Thanks Gary. The rocker cover came off hassle free luckily.

It's around 2-4mm wide and 2-3mm deep.

There is no chance maybe a rachet or spanner etc has been dropped on it?

I wouldnt think that would be easy to chip, bit it doesnt look like a clean cut or breakage, so its maybe been rubbing agaist something.

Doesnt look to serious and as long as there is no other engine damage.

Just started her up and it's idleing(sp?)very oddly, like the time between each compression is longer somehow.

The thing that puzzles me, is that there's the same wear on both shafts but some worse than others. The odd one being without any wear at all!

Is it worth me doing a compression test for safe measure?

What work have you just done to the engine?

Did you touch the ignition timing or distibutor(sp?) atol?

It doesnt seem to be low compression bud, but its hard to say without hearing it.

Just gave the cam cover a good clean really, took it off and saw the damage. Nothing ignition or timing wise touched.

Sounds 'rougher' than usual.

Sorry, i'm trying to explain it the best I can lol.

the plug leads etc are all on ok?

It could just be something silly like that.

Have you tried it on the road, is there any performance difference?

Plugs and plug leads are a ok.

Well, i'm a little concerned towards taking it for a run just in case something does go wrong.

Then again, it could just be me getting worried hehe.gif.

Cool, ye im like thats aswell always afriad something will go wrong,

More so for you having such a mint motor.

Its a strange problem you have decribed thou, if you were only removing the rocker cover and refitting it its weird how its just started idling rough.

Is the idle really bad or just lower, or does it fluctuate up and down?

There deffinately wasnt anything else touched?

Sorry for the late reply. Seems the plugs were fooked. The car was running a little lean at idle but after 5 miles or so it was fine.

Plugs have gone white and bubbly, after just sitting for so long I presume.

Shame about the camshafts though, wonder if Piper do anything for these cars....

just glad you figured it out :D

You can get the standard cams refprofiled to a fast road spec from kent cams and piper cams, but its £200 at least to do it.

Im not 100% sure how new cams would be, i have a set of second hand ones in perfect condition 80k on the engine if you need them. all you will need to do is valve clearances.

Well i have inspected them when i removed the head, i was happy enough to fit them to my car, i owned the whole engine and had it runnung before i removed it, so i never just got them out of some scrap yard.

The engine had done 80k, and it had no oil burning issues and had plenty in it when i checked so as far as i no there is no issues of cam wear due to low oil.

Thats all i can really say, i could upload some pics next week if you like?

or have you stepped away since the accident, Looking at them pics with your brothers evo sitting there makes me feel so gutted. Such a beautifull car and its gone now.
