Removed The Head, Valves Buggered?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

As some of you may know we've had loads of trouble with my bro's FTE conversion, the first problem with the first engine was that it had no compression in third cylinder. Cylinder 1, 2 and 4 were fine but 3 had nothing at all. It sounded like a V8, was missing like mad, throwing flames out of the screamer and really struggled to rev.

Now, as I looked in to it I heard that we could have bent a valve due to trying to get it running without timing it properly. At the same time people said the 4E has non-interference valves so therefore it can't be bent, however it could not be sealing properly.

I opened the head off the block today (go me, first time!) to find this..

And a view from the bottom..

Now, to me it looks like the valve is stuck open. I'm guessing this is why we had no compression, right? And could just this cause it to run like it did?

Also, if you look closely the head looks scored here, or is it just meant to be like this?

The other side, looks fine..

What could have caused this damage?

And finally, could this have cause any damage to the bottom end? Heres a quick pic if anybody can spot anything strange, if not, how can I check myself if there is anything dodgy going on down there?

All helpful replies will be much appreciated, thank you.

Any valves sticking open will result in no compression, thats a bitch that, dunno bout the 2 marks tho  doesnt look like its surposed to be like that :D

Just rebuilt the head bro, should be sorted then :surrender:

Just one question tho, is the 4E non-interference??

Cheers :angry2:

Where the damage is on the top of the head is that where the head bolt goes through by any chance? someone may have tried to previsly get a damaged bolt out or something?

as for the valves being bent i wouldn`t rule it out tbh get them all out n check them....lastly the bottom end imo? just rebuild it saves 1000000% headache and being pissed off later if it knocks etc

play it safe get the work done and take your time bro :surrender:

Can't take too long because my brother's car is off the road while we're doing this, I'll take my time with my own build because I'll be doing it on a spare engine. We have a few weeks for this so we're not rushing too much.

The bottom has been rebuild in 2007 anyway so it can't be too bad :surrender:
