So dependent on the state of tune, a higher power engine will of course create more heat, warranting a 'hotter' plug. A colder plug would merely overheat and fail, a too hotter plug will foul up and limit its performance. The heat range doesnt have anything to do with the temperature of the spark/ignition itself. Certain manufacturers work their heat range scale differently to others. NGK's works out the lower the number, the higher the operating temp.Heres a link from NGK's own website to verify.
