Taggy
HiSorry to hear your gearbox has started doing this, mine did the same recently and its a common fault on this gearbox. Its because your 5th gear syncro has become worn and the teeth have worn down to a point that they no longer hold the gear in place. The 5th gear is housed in the end casing of the gearbox, you will notice that there is a small end cover which can come off without having to take the gearbox out or split it. You could repair it your self or stick a new box in I repaired mine as i had a spare gearbox. There is a guide on here somewhere on how to do it, but i cant bloody find it! mattyD
have you checked your gearbox mount?if thats ok it could be your 5th gear assembly
H_D
It could be a number of things,...Knackered engine mounts, 5th gear itself, 5th gear hub, Linkages, shifter or even the bushes,http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?99548-Gearbox-help&highlight=
Rob Graham
Cheers for the feed back peeps, All my mounts are sound and linkages are all good, the car itself only has 50k on really but when i bought it, it had a knackered actuator which i dont know how long the lad had been running it like that for and whether it was just running max boost :S. i wasnt as clued up back then which didnt help. im running about 1.1 bar of boost which does creep at bit so could be about 1.2. But off what ive reead i thought these boxes were solid. But I'm on the limit with standard internals n ct9. So there should be a cover on the end of the gearbox for the 5th gear?? has anyone done a 6 speed box conversion??
Rob Graham
loving the EP70 lol
mattyD
Afew people are running near 240 on standard internals but that would be the limit mate and everything has to be set up perfectly how long it lasts though is a different matter! with regards to your gearbox, there is a cover on one of the sides in which you can take off and access 5th gear, your best bet would be to take that off and have a look to see if you can see anything abnormal or take it to a gearbox specialist
Rob Graham
Alright 240 sounds fun lol. Yeah im not that clued up on Gears n sycro's but ill have a look. is it a common fault with these boxes?? Im just wundering how often this problems gonna occur if i decide to go for more power :S
mattyD
A couple of people will tell you that over 300hp and you might have problems but it seems to be the luck of the draw dude I think 5th and 3rd tend to be problems with these boxes but again its all about the luck of the draw, some people have no problems, others (including me) have there are other options available if you wana run big power without worrying about you box, but it comes in the form of a 3k gear set from zisco
Rob Graham
3k is a bit extreme for me lol, I wouldnt mind a 6th gear like but not sure. what are you running n what did you do to cure it??
Taggy
Cheapest way to fix it is just buy a new box, you can pick one up for about £50-£100, try and get a glanza one as it will most likely lower mileage.
mattyD
Not running any power mate, just went due to age/usage as taggy said buying another box would be your best bet, I think burny has one for sale
Rob Graham
Cheers bud, £100 doesnt sound bad, i was looking into a 2zzge box but im not sure if it would fit :S. Is burney on here??
