iamlegend
just had a thought there and not sure on what to do well I was 100% aimed forging the engine on the starlet.. but seen loads of starlets making 240 on stock internals etc etc and even my old glanza is running strong..minus the turbo blown BUT the engine still strong.. my aim goal for power wise is 270/280 altho I would settle for 240 as been seeing canny few reaching them targets on basic tdo4 mods.. so do you think.. rebuilding my engine to make it like ""new"" replace the head gasket to a thicker..oem water pump etc etc etc...?? as when I think about it going forged for that extra 40-50bhp is alot of $$ I kno forged will mean 99% bullet proof if maintained correctly but these stock engines have been going for years on TDO4 powwwa running 240 bhp for a long time... in puts would be kool.. so rebuild engine with some upgrades i.e thicker head gasket etc fueling mods map or no no and go forged? maddox710
I think forged would be better for peice of mind, just so you know you will be running 240bhp reliably.
AdamB
Depends if your going to stick with the td04 tbh. You can always throw like a 1.6mm headgasket on the stock engine with some ARP headbolts. Should be good for like 1.3 bar on the td04 with a good map. How long it lasts is another question though. StuDoc 72
Forge it mate... Do it 1ce and do it right. No point rebuilding it like new then blowing it up and doing it again. Just TD04 it as it is and see how it goes then go from there and either forge it or blow it up then forge it lol.
_shaun_
^ this,as you said plenty of people run stock engines at 240 no point wasting money getting a fresh engine for 240. Just have to look at sparky he decided to rebuild his stock engine thinking it would be cheaper than the forged build the engine let go he decided todo the rebuild again and it let go again. So he decided to break . If he had just went forged to start prob woulda cost him the same as the 2 rebuilds with a far better result
kbond
I rebuilt my engine and then it blew 5 months later! That was on td04 aswell. Now thinking about forgeing, wish i did it the first time now
Asad
sparkys rebuild had other issues iirc it wasnt built correctly the bores were out of round/crank issues something of the sort anyway....if your going to rebuild use forged pistons...THE number 1 cause of failure IF your going to use the stock piston please please get it mapped properly im guessing you weren`t mapped Kbond ^^? ...every man and his dog says forge forge forge....theres no need for everyone to forge...look at the guys in the Caribbean stock internals/piss poor fuel and they are pulling numbers people here can only dream of...build to your power goal...iirc there is a lad on here with ross pistons and stock rods the engine was thrown in a 4x4 ep could ask him how hes getting on? i read on tgtt one of the traders ran something ridiculous like 1.9 bar on standard rods and low comp pistons with a conservative rev limit...it can be done safely no need to waste money if your power goals are low....then theres the issue of how much power do you actually want in a tin can...after 250bhp its becomes pointless imo breaking stuff for fun Edited February 18, 2013 by Asad
kbond
I was mapped, was setup not long after at tuning developements
