M-R-P
Hi peeps. After some knocking from under the front of the car, I've got the thing on stands as I type in fact, my investigations have led me to the point where the driveshaft meets the diff. It's slopping about in there like a goodun! Am I looking at a knackered diff? Driveshaft? Or is there a quick fix like a nut needing a few turns? It's a 98 GLS auto. All input gratefully receivedMartin.
M-R-P
Stupid phone, the title should read "cv/probably diff questions"

M-R-P
Stuck 465cc injectors in it and improved the cold air feed last month. Conservative estimate would be about 310bhp and maybe 330lb/ft.For now lol
5e colin
How does the cup come off mate? there is a ridge on the inner cup put a heavy bar there and a few taps outwards it will come out easy ( ish )
M-R-P
Think it's worth pulling it out? With the cup rattling about like that, am I right in thinking there's nowt I can do but get new diff bearings?
5e colin
so the cup aint loose the dif is loose thats a bearing job im not sure if its the same on the auto box but the manual bel can be taken off with al internals still in the box for eas of acces ?? not sure if it will work on auto tho ? M-R-P
There's a big plate on the back of the diff housing, should give me a way in?
M-R-P
There's a sort of housing around the hole the shaft goes into, about 5 inches wide. Maybe I can work through that?
5e colin
dunno ?
M-R-P
Lol. I think I'll just chop it in for something a bit newer and diesel powered.Annoying thing is, it's just had new shocks all round, service, power steering flush, brakes... Bloody cars.
5e colin
its no sweed ha ha convert it to manual know al about that ha ha
M-R-P
The thought did cross my mind but that'll be a bigger ball ache than rebuilding the diff lol.Think I'll sleep on it and make an educated decision later.Probably.How hard is it to rebuild a diff any way? 5e colin
did you do it before ??? if not i would not go near
daniel_g
If you are 100% certain the noise is coming from inside the autobox then best thing to do would replace the box, you will be able to get one cheap from a breaker.Personally id just convert it to a manual. M-R-P
The autobox is fine, it's the connection between the driveshaft and the diff that's flapping about. The plate on the side looks like it's there to allow access to the diff bearing so I think I'll do a little research and maby have a go. If that fails, I can always break it for parts.
