starlybruiser
Not having a good day so far i woke up late this morning after a night at the pub and i was feeling ruff to start with and i had my old saxo booked in for an MOT so i rushed out over to my nans and it wouldnt start so i had to jump start that, then i eventually got to the MOT Station and it failed on brake efficency or some shit like that, so i went back to my house and jumped into my starlet and went to start it, it started but died as soon as it started runnning, i then tried to start it again but the starter motor is just spinning over really fast as if its not engaging into the flywheel?? any help is much appreiciated due to it being easter weekend i have loadz to do but without a car im f**ked cheers starlybruiser
StarletRick
is the starter spinning, or can you hear it clicking?starter motors have 2 parts, there is the solenoid that pushes the teeth onto the fly, this makes a click. and the motor that spins it. it will whine if its not engaged. what one is it? starlybruiser
Try hitting the starter with a hammer while someone is trying to start it, see if it "helps" it engage. it turns out my starter motor is working ok, it just sounded a bit different because my car is not firing see was trying to diagnose this on my own when i really needed someone in the car cranking it while i was outside having a good listen and so on, so i got my mate to crank the car over while the oil cap was off and i could see the cam rotating so this obviously ruled out the starter motor and i thought straight away its got to be ignition related because apparently they are very temprimental?? so i dissconected the ht lead from the spark plug and used a screw driver and put it into the end of the lead and then hovered it over an earth while my mate cranked it over, now there was a spark but it wasnt very powerful, it wasnt the usuall bright ble spark it was looking rather dull, and there is fuel getting to the engine as you can smell the un burnt fuel, so whats the next plan of attack?? would it be the distributor?? cheers guys starlybruiser
Starletraje
Battery? My mate had a similar problem with his fiesta a few weeks ago. just kept clicking.jump started it and it worked fine after. That would explain the weak spark.Give it a try, no harm.If you already tried this then thats the extent of my technical knowledge in this situation
jon5698
How long have you had your car mate? also as previously said how old is the battery? as when i bought mine it only lasted a few weeks and died because of all the time it had been standing on the boat. Take it to a motor factors and ask them to do a test on it.
starlybruiser
How long have you had your car mate? also as previously said how old is the battery? as when i bought mine it only lasted a few weeks and died because of all the time it had been standing on the boat. Take it to a motor factors and ask them to do a test on it.I havent had the car that long, only about a month or so , the battery looks brand new and its got one of them spyglass things on the top to indicate the state of charge which looks very good, its turning over fine but its just not igniting the fuel, its definately getting fuel because you can smell it as your cranking the engine over, its got to be a problem with the ignition system somewhere. i have checked all the lead connections and they seem to be fine so my next plan of attack i think will be the distributor cap, i just really need to get it started for work on tuesday

starlybruiser
Clean inside the dizzy cap and try again mate.Well after easter dinner i decided to got out into the cold and remove my Distributor i decided to keep the leads attached save me f**king around unpluging them cuz i can never get them off lol any way i removed it and the 4 points inside were white and there is a slight groove worn into all of them so they didnt really look too good, also the middle terminal was quite badly worn and was black with carbon deposits, so i cleaned all these up and then i looked at the rotor arm and the terminal on there was also black. once it was all cleaned up i re-fitted it and cranked the engine, for a second it didnt fire then it chugged a lil bit and had a good cof and blam she started purring but i really think it could do with a new arm and cap so is there anywhere i can get one tommorow?? will halford stock them?? cheers starlybruiser who is now happy again ha ha
