Devs313
Just bought a rear caliper rebuild kit for my GT. Has anyone got a tutorial of how you remove and rebuild it?
Devs313
Anyone?
Calum122
No, but there really isn't much to the caliper, the seals, the piston and the caliper. Just reassemble it the way you disassembled it.
maerijn
Plenty of brake caliper rebuild videos on youtube Edited November 23, 2017 by maerijn
Devs313
Youtube was my first port of call. But I did not see any videos specific to starlets. I guess it is the same principle on all cars?
maerijn
Yes correct, they pretty much all have slider pins, a dust cover and the square seal inside the caliper. There is 1 difference, on the rear calipers the piston is on a thread which is for the handbrake, so you have to rotate it to get it in and out. You can rotate the piston it with a pair of screwdrivers or get a tool like in the pictures down this page: http://starlet-forum.nl/index.php?topic=24359.
Calum122
You don't need to rotate the rear caliper at all to remove it. The thread is to allow it to self adjust. So merely actuate the lever a few times and hey presto it's out.
glanzadude
removing the piston is the easy part it is fitting itback on the threads again is the bitch and get the dust boot seal over the piston
Djaniero
I'm doing this tomorrow on my car. Any tips for getting the piston back on the thread and getting the dust boot seal over it?

Probably different when you're doing under clock, but I done it at home and just took my time.
Djaniero
Would this work? https://youtu.be/wvOpg7hASLs
Calum122
Yeah probably, however you will need a caliper rewind tool to actually fix the piston in place.
Djaniero
Just doing this now guys and we vant for the life of ua get the piston back in. Just seems to be spinning off the thread
Calum122
The thread can actually be removed from the piston. You could remove it to ensure you haven't damaged the thread. I utterly destroyed the piston on mine, and the thread got knackered too. Luckily, my Dad managed to file the thread back inline for us (As this was not supplied with the piston). Remember, a downwards force is applied to the screwing motion to help it locate. Just be wary not to damage the thread. There is a tool you're supposed to use for this.
