starlet or pulsar?

Recommended Posts

my ep was recently written off(been driving 10years without a scratch-gutted :D ), i'm waiting for the insurance to payout and still recovering to some extent meanwile, ive been considering a nissan pulsar as an alternative mostly because its 4wd, i just wondered if it'll be worth the extra insurance/tax???

any input would be good even if im blaspheming by considering something other than another starbo!

personally, no.. depends on what you want to do project wise.. youve also got to remember they weigh in at about 1250kg's aswell so there heavy bastards.. but obv can be made pretty dam quick

hey,ive owned both. love starlets and pulsars.

if you dont mind the fact a pulsar does very little mpg, then id get one, everyone has different opinions but expect 15-20mpg. i got 17mpg roughly with my 300bhp pulsar.

imo pulsars are great,id have another anyday of the week, but im keepin my gt.

weak points on pulsars are the gearboxes over 300bhp.

at the end of the day if u aint happy with it u can always sell it.

It depends what you want for a car.

Starlet - FWD, Cheap to run, Cheap to Tax, 180hp then you have to spend funny money for more power, Reasonable handling, fantastic reliablilty

GTiR - 4WD, More Expensive to Run, More Expensive to Tax, 300hp is EASY to get, Reasonable handling, average reliability (as Aaron said gearboxes don't like much over 300hp)

The weight doesn't effect it much TBH. They have enough torque to fuck up alot of things off the lines.

I'm looking at getting one next after my 200 :D

could you guess roughly how much more a pulsar is to run? (my insurance for the gt was £466)

cheers

expensive, out of all the early90s group A rally cars it guzzles fual the most, but they are also the fastest in a straight line

wanted one back a while ago and spent ages looking into the pitfalls of buying one, as they are so cheap,

but the gearbox issues and problematic sensors that were really easy to fix but in acward places and the fact that 20mpg on a good day put me off as i do so many miles.

there was a website i used, think it was gtiroc that had an interesting autocar article where it was pitted against a

scooby

evo

lancier delta

323 gtx

that was a good read

Pulsar..... not much in it really that are in a diff. league to starlets!

however for the money it might be worth getting an early evo with the credit crunch as prices are at rock bottom!

on that note my bro has a Pulsar for sale if your interested?! :D

GTI-R's are silly quick, my mate is on his 3rd!

1st one he had to sell when he couldn't insure it.

2nd one blew up.

3rd one is now in bits....................after blowing up.

As said gearboxes are very weak, buy one thats had a Quaife unit put in.

Body panels are flimsy.

Brakes are s**t....................very s**t.

Get a good one though with around 350bhp and its a Ferrari killer down the 1/4 mile.

However running costs are extraordinary at that power level.

Ryno, link to your Bro's please.

Insurance on a Pulsar will be about the same as an Early Evo. Around 800-1000quid if your about 22-23 with a good licence.

I have to disagree with Ryno slightly, Evo's although more reliable, cost a fucking FORTUNE to repair when they break. Also the Evo 1-4 engines suffer from "Crank Walk" it is a design fault in them. So prepare for a Bottom end repair if you get an old one.

Evo's 5 and 6's are coming down in price, but still out my price range :-(

I love pulsars, never owned one though. My mate swapped his civic for one, it was suppose to be standard but it pissed all over our mates tuned impreza (was maybe just a shit impreza!) but when i quized him why none of the front end lined up properly, then his insurance foned him to tell him it had been previously written off he sold it. Hes dying for another one though.

Id definately consider one if i didnt have my gt, tho as mentioned above gearboxes are like chocolate with lots of power

yeah they do have their pros and cons, but like Pulsars with gearboxs, RX7's with rebuilds and evo 5/6's are riddled with their problems belive me!! :D

but there are more evo specialists and parts are much easier to get hold of then pulsars these days!!!

i was goin to sell mine for a pulsar about 3 months ago, having a ral good think about it the best car between them is the starlet hands down. a pulsar is easy to squeeze extra bhp from but gearboxes are a once in 3 months sort of barrier if you thrash them around to much with to much power. the only option would be to buy one with a good box., sumthing like a quaiffe but these cost a f**kin fortune. dont get me wrong i would love to have one, they really are ferrari killers, i drove one with 340bhp when i was looking to buy and its was INSANE!!!!, but theres just something about the starlet that i would miss if i sold her..... Now shes my new project.

very good luck with the choice mate, but if you go for 1 make sure its a good 1....

hope u make the right choice..

just my opinion guys not everyones im sure..

cheers...

jamie. :D

I was looking at swapping my Glanza with my mates Pulsar a few months ago, but decided against it after reading peoples comments on them. And then the fact I need the car every day and it would cost so much for fuel!

But I love the cars, and my friend had one which was bloody quick and he never had any issues with it at all and he had it for 1.5years. But knowing my luck, it would brake in a week!

I didnt have the money to spend on keep fixing one if it did go wrong.

Im looking at getting an Evo 5 now, next year some time.

The insurance on a Pulsar GTiR for me was £600 fully comp, 21 with 3ncb.

Evo 2 or 3 was £1800!

Evo 5 will be £900 as of January.

I suppose you need to look at whether you would have spare cash to spend on fixing things like the gear box if it did go wrong.

A Starlet is definatly alot cheap to run and tax etc.

Ryno, your Bro's car looks great. Not really wanting a black one but if the price was right I would snap it up. How flexable is his price on NissanGTiR? Would I be better PM'ing him on there? If my car goes this weekend there might be a chance I'd come down in 1 or 2 weeks for it.

will let him know your interested and see what he says :D

..but gearboxes are a once in 3 months sort of barrier if you thrash them around to much with to much power..

if your doing that in a Pulsar then forget about buying a performance car or you'll no doubt have to replace brakes, tyres, clutches every 3 months too from your driving style!

the gearbox problem is really over-hyped, i'm not saying it dosn't happen... but don't subarus have chocolate pistons? and french cars have tinfoil pannels.. and italian cars have bad electrics....

....but decided against it after reading peoples comments on them. And then the fact I need the car every day and it would cost so much for fuel!

don't belive everything you read on forums mate, most people who post have little or no experience on what they are talking about.... like when i had a 16yr old tell me not to buy a GT because they always go pop because a 1.3 can't safely handly boost! :D

also if your thinking that a evo is going to be any less then a Pulsar to run then you might want to re-think getting one, and thats coming from someone that has not eaten for a few days to afford running costs when times were hard a few months back!

Like most high performance cars, having a small budget means you'll struggle. Starlets are cheap to run and stuff which means you can have on on a shoe string budget. Things like Pulsar's, Evo's, 200sx's, Scoobies, RX-7's, GT4's etc need alot more money to play with.

+1, sometimes i miss my starlet, usually every 6months when the service for the evo comes round! :D

Most of what I hear about Pulsars is from owners/previous owners. I don't listen to people who havent ever had one, cause they go by what they hear!

My bloke has an Evo 3, so I know how much they cost to run. Certainly not cheap, but something I would rather have and waste money on over a Pulsar.

quoted the same £600ish with some mods and breakdown cover for pulsar,i have some testdrives lined up in the near future so we'll have to see which i prefer, after all i didnt buy my gt with my head at the time!

anyone know if theres a workshop manual for the pulsar?
