Temp Gauge.

when im parked up and the temp gauge reads half way and the fan cuts in its fine, but as soon as i boot it down the road its dies straight back down to below the c ?

is this normall due to the weather ??

not really as the thermostat should shut when the water temp start to drop keeping the engine at that temp if the thermostat dont shut it will just keep cooling the water more and more

shall i check it works alrite with a kettle ? (boiling water) make sure it opens and shuts ok

yeh best bet if it shut jam a bit of wire in the flat bit of metal that the springs holding shut and dangle it in boiling water if it drops off its opening fine then add cold water to it it should the start to close if you have to add alot of cold water for it to close its fucked or jammed but there that cheap just replace it

not sure but cant imagine it doing it much good as if the engine is cooler so will the oil which mean it'll be thicker it'll find it harder to lube ya turbo and internals i wouldnt go booting it untill its fixed

the gauge sounds fucked to me, even if the thermostat stayed wide open i dont think itd cool the engine that well when ure booting it, not down to cold on the guage

its very cold outside and same happened to my voyager on the motorway dropped all the way down to the blue

This is going on with mine too it warms up fine but as soon as i start to drive the temp gage drops, when i stop for a while it will go mid way

if it only drops a little then your okay, if it drops all the way to Cold again in a short space of time you got problems. most likely the thermostat playing up.

this topic has been bought up many times and most of time its the thermostat.

the temp gauge in the weather were getting, will drop slightly.bit less than half way-ish..

when your rolling in gear off throttle e.g down hill, the car will start to cool down. so if notice it drop slightly its okay.

also you might be using your heaters, this also cools down the water temperatures, as your extracting the heat from the cooling system to keep yourself warm. remember this will only drop it slightly not all the way to cold again.

no point faffing around testing it, can never simulate the real high temp conditions that occur in the cooling system when you class it as open it mabe too late for the engine.....dont forget our cars are 10+ years old cant expect things like the stat to last forever its cheap enough to replace, renew the coolant, whack some new hoses on if you wish and see what happens........i wouldnt even drive it let alone keep off the boost with such a essential part of engine possibly damaged.

yep the thermostat job is to get the engine up to operating temp so if this happens correctly all engine internals expand making big cold component tolerences small thus reducing internal engine wear + sealing, and if faulty 2 things happen, over heating = engine internals (quick engine failure or engine running cold = (long term) exessize engine internal wear, symtoms= loss of power, exhaust emmisions high.
