Carl.
just wondering about everyones 'technique' (if there ever were one) of warming up their 4efte's is it better to let the engine idle for a while (and how long for)ordrive the car trying not to boost until temp gauge is at correct postion or a bit of both i.e let it idle for a few minutes then drive without boost until correct operating temperature is reached.thanks ladies nd gents carlp.s/ ive heard leaving your car to idle when cold is not very good for the engine but on the other hand i cant imagine driving an aspriated car when cold isnt much good either... so to me it must be a lose lose situation
Blitz
no.1 id put some nulon engine protection in with your oil as this helps reduce cold start engine wearand the temp gauge is funny cause i ve found even when the temp gauge is up to temperature the oil pressure is still a lil highi wait till the oil pressure settles then i drive it
ste91
Just avoid high revs/brisk acceleration for 5-10 minutes. Or longer to be on the safe side.I like to let a car idle for atleast one minute before setting off, but that's just me.
LukeSR
In the mornings i let her idle for 5-10 minutes. Wack the heaters on full hot and de-ice her.. then for about a mile, mile half keep the revs down till temp gauge is at the middle
ktl
In the mornings i let her idle for 5-10 minutes. Wack the heaters on full hot and de-ice her.. then for about a mile, mile half keep the revs down till temp gauge is at the middle i idle her for 30sec - 1 minute then drive off boost until my oil temp gauge goes up. That way i know the oil is fully warmed up and going around.
LukeSR
Should never boost a cold engine bud.
Driver
Your engine will be wearing wether your sat still or driving so sat letting it idle/warm up is not going to give you any sort of gain. All i do is get in, ignition on, let it get fuel pressure, start it, radio/seatbelt on etc then drive away and so far not had any problems and this is what ive done on all my cars
addz
I start the car leave it idling for a few mins sometimes anything between 2-5 mins especially in this cold weather. Then drive real slow off boost for 10mins or so of the journey.
Raz
In the mornings i let her idle for 5-10 minutes. Spot on lol apart from the de icer bit lol just put heaters on full and rear de mist if it's icy and wait about 5 mins all the windows are good as new!
Driver
I get my varsity card out and get deicing (varsity is a club in town and i have a discoutn card like a credit card type of size/shap)its the best deicer in the world lol
LukeSR
I just use my college student card + de-icer LOL
scot-ish
yup, start it up, set turbo timer to 5, let her idle and hide back in the house, in this cold weather i do it twice, then the car is warm inside lol, then i dont ever boost my car untill i need to, like slip ways etc, very rarely does my car get on boost, i drive around on low boost settin aswell. bit of a waste for a turbo car, but i dont see the point in hashing it unless its for a reason. The_Notorious_C_A_T
Leaving a car to idle isn't a good way to warm it up to operating temps.Best way to warm up a car is drive it, keeping it off boost. And the temperature gauge, if you're talking about the standard ones in the dial pods is water temp. That will read warm pretty quick, your oil won't be. When I had a etb digital dash in my 106gti, it had a proper oil temperature gauge, and it was only just up to operating temperatures after about 10 miles of sitting at 60. Driver
Like i said i get in start it belt on etc then go but it doesnt see boost untill theres temp in the oil/water, there has been many a time though where water is showing still neer botom of the gauge but when feeling the sump it it warm.
