i started the engine tonight and sounds very very smooth, however when you give it a rev, the tappets are very loud, i have heard that if you dont fill the shim buckets with oil (which i didnt) then it will be tappety for a few miles until the oil gets to it, is that correct?????

cheers

Did you adjust/Check valve clearances atol when rebuilding the engine?

Is it a top end tapping noise or is it hard to say, and about filling with oil, i think that only applies to hydraulic tappets as they drain of oil if they sit for a while but once oil gets through them they quiet down. but you a have bucket and shim setup so shouldnt have that problem.

all the shims are the same as when the head was taken off, nothing has been swapped etc so should be fine.

I've literally only started it up about 4 times, I've not even driven it yet

I would give the Valve clearances a check, not saying they will be out but it doesnt mean they were bang on before you stripped the engine.

Was there any head work done? or valves/springs removed?
