Dan Evans
i started the engine tonight and sounds very very smooth, however when you give it a rev, the tappets are very loud, i have heard that if you dont fill the shim buckets with oil (which i didnt) then it will be tappety for a few miles until the oil gets to it, is that correct?????cheers
ToyotaTech15
Did you adjust/Check valve clearances atol when rebuilding the engine? Is it a top end tapping noise or is it hard to say, and about filling with oil, i think that only applies to hydraulic tappets as they drain of oil if they sit for a while but once oil gets through them they quiet down. but you a have bucket and shim setup so shouldnt have that problem.Gary
Dan Evans
all the shims are the same as when the head was taken off, nothing has been swapped etc so should be fine.I've literally only started it up about 4 times, I've not even driven it yet
ToyotaTech15
I would give the Valve clearances a check, not saying they will be out but it doesnt mean they were bang on before you stripped the engine. Was there any head work done? or valves/springs removed?Gary

rorenapier
Did you remember to tension the inlet cam gear? Also when forged motors are cold, the pistons will "slap" until they heat up a bit.
Russleh
that happened to me mate. and only thing i did was cams out to take head off and back on and together again but i didnt tension the gear so like you nothing else was changed so that could be your problem. I've covered a fewq thousand miles now and tis fine just tappy.
