My Glanza project - street legal track car

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm back on the UKSC after quite a while, so I have had my glanza v 1997' for about 4 months now, and I liked it enough to buy another one as a project car, haha. So I saw this 96' spec glanza v on trademe (similar to ebay in New Zealand) with only 103xxx km's on the clock, and genuine, which is pretty rare to find on glanza's in new zealand, trust me on this. Well, it had a few problems, the engine mounts are worn out pretty badly so in reverse gear, when you're actually reversing, the steering shakes and he said it would overheat sometimes. I ended up bargaining it down to 2000$ nz dollars and bought it last night (29th of February).

The features on the new one:

96 spec'

front mount intercooler kit

aftermarket extractors

38mm external wastegate

no air con

What a few mates and I did to it today in 1 hours:

strip the rear as much as possible

took the bonnet off

took the front bumper off

I went for a quick test drive just on my road then (after completely stripping it), and found the car to be flying with the weight reduction, the pull was just so much bigger than my other glanza that I've had for a few months, also it didn't overheat even once and I was thrashing it, basically it was 4 rounds of a 0-100 without a burnout, the front mount intercooler was so hidden because of the number plate, and where it was placed, I specifically believe that was the problem of overheating.

Here are a few pics of of the car, when I got it, and now.

What I need from the fellow UKSC members reading this? any advice possible on the intake for the turbo, at the moment it's running with no air filter as the oil filter is blocking the turbo entrance for the air, also on what else can possibly be done to make it a road legal track car, why 'road legal'? Because after I replace the engine mounts, I'm going to sell my other glanza and spend whatever I get on rebuilding/overhauling the engine and probably another paint job as orange is a pretty ricer colour on a glanza.

Cheers guys

Posting the pictures in the next reply.

Well my friend you don't realy need an air filter, some people say it will damage your turbo compressor wheel but I've always ran mine without one and I live near the sea. Just get a sive from the shop and use the mesh with a jubbalie clip.

As for the engine if your going to re-build it you maze well go forged (safer in the long run) and this will with stand anything from big turbo's to getting thrashed all day.

Hope this helps :)

Okay, after trying to figure out how to attach the photos of the car I've taken, I cannot seem to figure out how to upload them, so if someone is kind enough to tell me how to upload the photo directly on to this/in a reply, would be greatly appreciated.

looks like a custom manifold and who ever made it didnt think it through properly.

the wastegate pipe is right up against the top rad pipe. that will heat up the water even more than it is already

you need to put filter on turbo, so it could suck in rubbish and ruin you engine. plus at the moment it will suck in hot air coming off oil filter, which is not good.

it looks like a VF series turbo, so if i was you i would change the manifold, there plenty available for this type.

also get rid of power steering gives you more space to be able to get filter on turbo.

to make the car lighter get rid of the ABS, you dont need it.

have you got any management? e-manage? boost controller?

Hey there Starlet Addict, thanks for your feedback, I also had doubt on this turbo, looks smaller than the ct9, but I'm wondering how it's boosting 8 pounds on standard boost. The power steering, I was wondering that I would need it for the tracks for easier turning, and same with the ABS so the wheels don't lock up when I have to brake hard, and I've got no management yet/boost controller. I've only just bought the car 1 day ago so yeah, still working my way up. Any more advice would be appreciated too, by anyone. :)

I have no idea to be really honest about the exact colour name, but I'm thinking of getting it repainted, any ideas on whether I should? some say that orange glanza looks a bit ricer sort, also I have an evo 6 bonnet on my glanza as the external wastegate is sitting fairly high up that the glanza bonnet doesn't fit.
