Plug & Play Ecu`s, Remapping?

Recommended Posts

Dont know if this has been asked before, but been doing a little research and supposedly the Plug & Plays are just a stock ecu with a Glued in EPROM board, which is the part which holds the map and is remappable.

On the same note, went to visit a tuner nearby me, and he mentioned that as far as he is aware the EPROM chips in these plug and plays are mappable, Hence how the japs used to map them depending on the setup.

Do you reckon its worth getting him to have a look and see if he can map it? He seems pretty confident, only thing is then he will have to break the seal on the ecu:/

They are 100% just an additional board. and it is mappable but will all be in japanese and i doubt he will have the right software to rewrite a map so potentialy you could ruin a 400quid ecu. tbh they are over priced and over rated a piggy or standalone is better in every way. it would be like some one buying bekhams old footie boots wich are size 10 when they are a size 9.......................they dont quite fit right but the are bekhams boots so worth the money! Same princepal as plug n plays arnt set for your car but its a bltz and plugs in so must be worth 400quid lol.

It can be done, and you can write your own software onto it if you know how to write code, so the language barrier isn't a problem as the chip will be simply completely wiped, I know as i've done it at uni.

But like others said, its not really worth the risk of an ecu thats worth money, when you can buy a programmeable management system for the same price really. For a technical exercise, why not, but you won't be really any better off as it will be a pain to map.

Chances are to get some data you would have to have a programmable system in place to figure a map, then transfer all that data onto the EPROM.

Yeh i see what your saying, But the lad reckons as long as he can plug into it, the software he has he will supposedly be able to map it, Surely it wont cause damage if he were to plug it in and have a looksee? Or copy the data, then have a play with it after?

Advantages of doing this i think is i wont have to travel miles and miles to get a piggyback mapped, which is essentially an ecu which just tricks the standard one? Bit cheaper as well i think.

If its a simple procedure, why would it be a bad thing?

It would be a was of time and money Toff.

And tbh why try and change the map thats already in it? the AFR thats build in it will adjust its self to what ever spec you are running anyway!.

Also i agree with what sorty is saying some what about a piggy back ECU been abit better IF you are planning on running over 200BHP but if you are planning on Running 200BHP or there abouts then a plug & play is worth every penny!.

It depends on how healthy your engine is i know a few people like socks that have got over 200bhp running a Plug & Play ecu and i know some people that have got just under 200BHP useing a Plug & Play like John on here think he just got under 200bhp so he hopped for a piggy back but only gained a few BHP and a few torque but a few 100 quid down iwas it realy worth it? Pluss john was running abit lean thats one of the reason he hopped from a Piggy back but there is other way of sorting that out like advanceing the timeing and shotting a fpr (whitch Zisco adviced me to do) on which would of been alot cheaper then buying a piggy back then getting it mapped etc.

We all have our own views on this but i have tried every method in the book i even Hopped for an apexi power FC on my old car and only gained about 2bhp over the plug and play

Also Toff are you talkeing about Richard @ motorscope?

Yeh tbh micky i very much doubt i will do it, Only if i went bigger turbo etc, so i could have the ability to map it/ suit lots of mods. And yeh the differences beetween the lot power wise are very small, Its just the fine details you can alter at the end of the day.

And nope, Mark hardy at Automark, Nipped through on friday to see him about it dude

The eprom is essentialy the same idea as a piggy too dude. it is also just tricking the oem ecu as its soldered to the oem board so its doing the same concept. all we are saying is if you rewrite it then its worth very little (more to do with broken seals and people knowing yours was fiddled with) and all you are doing is playing with a very expensive piggyback. if this guy can map then flog the plug n play buy an emu and get him to map that?? Same outcome less potentiol of fubaring you expensive ecu.

Yeh fair point shorty, think the second the seals are broken its a bit of a no no for people. And i asked him about EMU`s and he said he hasnt mapped them. Do you need the software to map one of these or is it a relatively simple thing to do? He does Apexi power fcs, all the standalones etc!

Has this guy even got a rolling road and does he read AFR's? My mate had his ECU 'mapped' and its crap, far better off just keeping the plug and play ECU as at the end of the day it was designed for EP's by top manufactures, if not go piggyback and get it mapped properly

Emu will come with software if he can map a power fc he can map an emu. and how may jdm plug n play eprom based starlet ecu's has he maped? lol if he hesitates mapping an emu i wouldnt let him anywhere near the plug n play. is also possable he wants to rip off the plug n play map to flash onto other units n replicat the plug n play if hes that keen to look at it lol
