Jack of all trades... Master of none

Recommended Posts

"Jack of all trades, master of none" is a figure of speech used in reference to a person that is competent with many skills but is not necessarily outstanding in any particular one. (straight from Wikipedia)

For example: Would you rather be a complete ninja at taking a certain type of car apart and rebuilding it with your eyes closed or know a little about many cars??

Like the American Army mechanics, they all specialise in one thing. You have "Bob" which is the engine man, "John" is the gearbox man and "Smith" is the suspension man. They were extremely good with their part of expertise but when i asked them to do something out of their comfort zone they just laughed.

I saw this in Afghanistan as i am a mechanic in the Army.. Majority of the crap vehicles out there are American so when we got stuck with some jobs we went to them for help (even though it pains me to say it)

Me: Alright mate we have a problem with this engine, we have tried everything, can you have a look for us please?

American mechanic: God dam bud, if you come 2 days ago we could of helped ya but "Bob" is away on RnR for 2 weeks

Me: oh right ok....... well....... thanks.

As soon as we told them that we did everything from engine, gearbox, brakes ect, they thought we were the best thing since sliced bread lol. :p

I just wanted to know how people feel about it, this is aimed more at mechanics but can be used in other jobs aswell. :)

This is pretty much my job in one.

Im a

C n c machinist

Tool maker

Tool setter

Fork truck driver

Picker/warehouse manager

General matainence on anything from moulding machines, fork trucks, air compressor systems, water cooling systems, grinding machines etc etc u name it i have to have a look at it.

Then do most the stuff on my car aswel altho i dont weld as I've never had anywhere to learn.

I think you're more useful in smaller companies if you can do multiple jobs than if you only specilise in one area as if i was off and i was the only person to drive the fork truck then my place would be stuck without me. But since theres a couple of people who do my job then it means the place can keep turning when im not there

Liked that wee story, lol at americans.

I'm a mechanic, a car is a car really but it helps to specialise in a particular make obviously. In my work there are two franchises, citroen and hyundai, i do the hyundais thankfully so rarely do much on the french pieces of shit.

Some places have electrical techs though that only really do those type jobs, but best to do it all. Only thing i despise is stripping and rebuilding gearboxs, but being a hyundai tech i've had atleast one a week solid for fucking ages.

Thats pretty much me, i did mechanica at college, started a mechanics job, now its evolved into window tinting and vinyl wrapping, i can do all of them to an extent, but im not specialist in any.

I dont like it, i feel un-valued at work seen as theres a mechanic and a tinter there already!

Im have to agree with that last comment, not being specialised in something does mean you dont feel as valued as others might.

Its like of all the things i do the only thing that id say i excel in compared to anyone else is on the fork truck and imo anyone can do that. Where as the cnc or the moulding machines to know your way around them and to know all the ins and out is hard to learn as im always switching between all the different trades so to speak :/

Yeah i think you should have a good general knowledge about your field of work what ever it may be... but have some sort of specialised job. You know something that people go up to you because only you know what to do. It makes you more versatile imo, lets you take on more then you would if you only know one certain part of your job. Plus it makes you stand out from the rest if people keep going up to you for help or advice. (more browny points :p )

^^^^^^^ lol yeah i know what you mean, That's what i was getting at... Being specialised in a certain part of your job is brilliant that makes you an asset to the team, but i also think you should know everything about your field of work before hand. Then specialise in a part, so if people come up to you for help you know how to tackle a wider range of problems.

(Also im attached to Engineers and can i say that you lot are the most fucked up bunch of individuals that i have ever worked with :) No offence lol)

Cheers mate! Haha

I work in the HQ out on tour, I found it a bit daunting when I nipped out to find 8 Americans sat in a line covering the same job as me working 12 hour shifts!

After 7 months working with them I still called them all Bob!
