akyakapotter
Ok so my girlfriend has been quite ill all week went to the doctors yesterday and they signed her off for 10days. She dropped her sick not into work today and had a phone call at 4:30 telling her they have let her go surely they can't do that she has never had any written or verbal warning where do we stand with this. I'm so screwed now as we can no longer afford our rent.

rob_bower
It depends on what type of contract ie permenant, fixed term, casual etc and how long she has worked there.
StuDoc 72
Yeah mate afraid so and its a year not 6 months they can sack her for anythin other than discrimination.Sorry to hear it mate im sure she will find something. Can she not wait on tables somewhere in the timebeing? Edited January 25, 2013 by StuDoc
akyakapotter
She was on a permant contract I believe. been there just under 10months.
james@cjperformance
due to the amount of time she has been there she can be let go at any time without reason. my mrs got sacked for long term sickness due to an injury at work and she has been there 4 + years so a bit different you shouldnt have any trouble getting extra work for the time being though ? feel for you dude
smobey_sutton2
Yeah, you can't sack someone for being ill when they have handed in a real doctors note. Phone Citizens advice and talk to them and also try ACAS who govern employment law. You'll be able to take them to court if they don't give her the job back.
H_D
Acas can only tell you what the law says the don't advise you on what to do unless if the case goes to tribunal. If she calls citizens advice she will more than likely be referred on us @ community legal advice. Yes u can u can sack someone for anything other than discrimination if they have been employed there for under a year if their employment started before march 2012 if you started after then you can be sacked for anything for 2 years. Tara
Yes, unfortunately she can be sacked for any reason other than discrimination and they dont even have to tell her why Contact your council asap to put a claim in for housing benefit/council tax benefit and she can claim job seekers to tide you over
