Ronan S
Well lads and lassies.A few weeks back while dropping my GT to my unit she started blowing steam from the rad and expansion bottle even though the gauge was reading around the normal level.I assumed the worst and thought the headgasket was gone so left it alone for a week or 2 and decided to do a compression test 2 nights ago which came back as follows,172 172 169 173That seems to be fine(fair enough theres a slight drop in psi but its nothing to worry about i've been told)After fiddling with the rad cap I let the car run again and it was fine,no steam or bubbling or a bit.Did the same tonight but after taking it for a spin and pulling up in the unit, there was no steam or a bit but after the car had turned off you could hear the expansion tank bubbling and it let out some water but once again, gauge was reading as normal.I'm going to change the rad cap and thermostat asap, also noticed there is very little pressure in the top rad pipe.Any ideas on whats causing this? akyakapotter
Mine dose this but my top hose is quite hard I've still not got to the bottom of it yet
Ronan S
I might try bleed the system tomorrow evening or something and when I'm off next get my hands on a few rad cap and thermostat and see if it sorts it
akyakapotter
I have a new rad to try when I get a mounting kit I changed my rad cap to a Trd 1.3 one and made no difference at all.
JayJ
My mate has the same bubbling problem with his Impreza and it turned out to be headgaskets. Leak was very small and only happened when engine was fully warmed up. :-/

AdamB
Do a CO test mate. Take a bit of the coolant and it will change colour (to green I think) if there is any presence of CO, this indicates a headgasket failing/failure.

StuDoc 72
Snap on they cost a fortune lol. Go to a garage and get one done or something but bubbling in the coolant tank is normally a good indicator of the head gasket. Not garunteeing thats the problem but its a good possibility. LeeG
Headgasket or worst case cracked head.
melon
Mine did this and chucked the expansion cap off when I had my foot down then the head went two weeks later
templar2007
I had that in my gt and it was the head gasket
Ronan S
So even though the compression test came back fine ye wreckon headgasket?
melon
I tested mine and it was fine, then went a couple of weeks later. I took mine for a quick 'test' with a good whack of boost and sure enough.... steamy! Seems this has happened to a lot of people
AdamB
So even though the compression test came back fine ye wreckon headgasket? A compression test will not show up very small combustion leakage. You will need a leak down test or a CO test to determine how well the gasket is sealing. You will find the headgasket will have gone a small amount if you remove the head. Edited February 19, 2013 by AdamB
A L 3 X
Mines just started making the rad pipes hard when the engine warms up, do I have the same issue?
AdamB
Have no idea in terms of rad pipes being hard or soft tbh. Be better off doing some sort of test to verify if there is a issue or not. Most garages will be able to do a CO test, only takes 30 seconds to do. And a compression test takes 5 mins.
A L 3 X
I've done a comp test got 172 176 175 175 literally a week before I noticed the pipes hard, ill get a co test done and then make a thread asking how to do the hg if need be lol
LeeG
If pipes are going hard then yes there's a good chance head gasket is going as exhaust gases are entering the water channels causing pipes to go hard, get sniff test done on it to confirm.
A L 3 X
Great lol, will do, I assume it will need doing, will I need the head skimming if its not overheated?
akyakapotter
Hmm looks like my hg is gone to been like it for months then mine fills the overflow bottle up but sucks its self back in when it's called down and top rad hose goes quite hard coolant dosen't smell like its getting fumes In it strange. A L 3 X
Weird mate, typical mine did it on way down to see dean and get my td04 fitted, so I can't even give it anything lol, had to call my map off as well, fuck it I think I'm gonna do hg, Cambelt again, water pump and valve seals to sort it out good and proper
StuDoc 72
Make sure its not a blocked water jacket.
A L 3 X
What's that mean mate, pardon my igborance, and what will diagnose it?
StuDoc 72
Have you tryed to take off the water hoses and blast out the cooling system then refill it? Maybe worth a try 1st its free because you wont need to use antifreeze if your gna go straight ahead and do the HG as you will be draining it anyway just an hour or so graft if you have a hose.
