Help with a question on my assignment!!!

Recommended Posts

The engine control unit has a pre-programmed set of tabular data, of which it gathers relevent data from various engine sensors, such as the MAP/MAF, IAT, CTS, TPS, Lambda, knock sensor, to process the defined value from the data table.

These various sensors have an influence on the ignition advance and retard, for example if the IAT sensor records a lower value of temperature ignition advance is able to be increased due to the colder air entering the engine thus giving the engine more power on colder nights, rather than hot desert weather. If the engine control unit detects events such as knock/pre-ignition via the knock sensor, it will then retard the ignition timing to save the engine from catastrophic damage, leading to broken pistons, headgasket failures and any increase in combustion pressure from having the ignition far too davanced.

Once the engine control unit has gathered the data from these sensors it is then able to "look up" the optimal ignition advance angle, this is sent as signal to the coil which then in turn ignites the spark, depending on if sequential ignition is used, the signal is sent directly to the pencil coil unit.

Probably could add some more to that :)

oxford brookes?

Yeah man its fucking shit. I wanna leave and get an apprenticeship. I've had to drop 2 modules this year because I was in a group with some numpty's and our work got a shit grade and wasn't prepared to carrying on working with them so dropped the modules. Now I gota take em next year, hoping I can do the work on my own. Atleast that way I can only blame myself for getting a shit grade.

I only just started this year on the college side as I planned on being a PE teacher or something sport related after school but things changed when I had a bad injury playing football. Went into full time work after I recovered and last year divided to pull my finger out and do something that I love so... Motorsport it was :)

What sorta stuff do you guys do a college? When I did my BTEC it was basically just learning about like engines, ignition systems, diesels, welding etc. I never actually got into the depth of designing, which is what uni is all about. Uni is just full of the maths shit.

We have a formula 1000 Renault that actually competes which is pretty cool... We run the dyno and learn tuning methods. Aswell as the basics.. It's first year so it's all basics to me now but others in my group have never done any work on a car. We do physics, Motorsport related maths and electronics too in the classroom. Maths/science isn't really my strong point, I'm more of a hands on kinda guy :D

Sounds cool, the college I went to had a dyno, was a shit one bare in mind lol. But no lecturer there had any experience in motorsport at all, they were all just normal mechanics that had came to teach, although some were interested in performance cars and racing.

Everything I do at uni now is maths, theres very little that isn't. Next year I'll be designing a suspension setup, might see if I can do it on the starlet and see if I can get some idependent rear suspension push rod setup going on :p
