idle control valve

when the idlling is not right what could cause this. when waiting in traffic the idling goes up and down from .5 to 1000rpm and so on. could the idle control valve have gone?

Common issue.. You can block it off completely, and if the idle issue continues, it's not your iacv. I'd then be looking at vac leaks etc

could it be a misfire? ht leads distributor etc. it does this when has been driven and when i stop in traffic or park up. it goes up and down.

If your idle control valve is broken, you will get a stable high idle between 1000-1200, because the valve is leaking all the time.

well. this is what happens. when i start the car works perfectly. when its warmed up and im driving then stop at the lights or pul up to park the revs drop to 1000rpm then lower like the cars gonna die then up to 1000rpm then down and it does this for about 30 seconds and then stop at about .800rpm and works fine. what can cause this??? ie got a video on my phone but don't know how upload it on here.

i heard that if you try to clean it the gold metal bit inside can break? aint it easier just to change it ?

I just bought a new valve from Toyota last week and it cost 202 euros, so if the price is not a problem go ahead :-)

You can try to clean it without opening it, just spray cleaner inside so all the dirt comes out and then shake it dry.
