Trouble Starting - Have Fuel and Spark

Recommended Posts

I hate these threads as they are so vague, but im getting a bit stumped.

For people who dont like reading, key points are in bold

We have a GT, that we took the engine out of, and now its back in. Everything is visibly plugged in.

Whilst it was out we removed some sensors, and relocated the battery to the boot.

The battery in the boot is earthed to the boot catch.

The sensors we removed are:

1: The Panel of sensors above the ignitor
2. The Termistor looking thing, that is in the light loom
3. The sensor with two vacuum ports at the end of the injector/knock sensor wiring

All of which im pretty sure arent important, but just to mention everything

WE have fuel pressure at the rail, and it smells of fuel when trying to crank it.

Also if we put a spark plug in the end of the HT lead then it sparks when earthed to the manifold. It sparks approx once a second. Is that too slow?

The engine earth, there is only one, from the gearbox to the passenger side chasis leg. Although im sure it was like this before the engine came out and it worked fine.

We definately have fuel at the rail, as we have pressure. but how can i test the injectors?

Then you'll just need to do the usual checks until it runs lol, been there many times haha.

Make sure the timing is spot on

Make sure the starter is getting the correct V

Spark plugs are clean/new

Cylinders arent flooded

Youve a good battery

Good earths

Swap over injectors

Along those lines anyway.

None of the sensors you removed will affect starting.

Same. and Done all of those.

Except check starter voltage

and Check igntion timing (have adjusted on the 2 12m bolts, but need to tyr taking the distributer out and spinning it 180.

im sure its something simple and stupid

Just a nightmare, and i KNOW none of those sensors are important. but when you run out of options you start doubting yourself you know how it is. just frustrating

If there wet you don't have a spark or a strong enough one...

DO you have a decent spark on ALL 4 cyl's....

Try turning it over for a long period of time with injectors unplugged to clear the cyl of shite. (60secs+)

Poor some fuel into the throttle body and try starting it without the injectors still plugged in...

The spark is a bit naff (its quite yellow)

tried spraying brake cleaner in the inlet and it didnt seem to go

Ive got a feeling is something to do with ignition

Swap the coil / ignitor over for a known good one.

This is a known good one, as it started the car before we took the engine out.

Will test it on my car tonight, as taking my GT there to compare tonight

Do what I suggested...

Will rule out flooding it in this cold weather!

Will do it when i head back up there tonight

Glad its sorted :) can be easy to mis timing sometimes ;)

I'd checked ignition timing but not the actual timing

No idea how it moved as the engine ran when removed and we didn't touch the cambelt.

Just chirping if runs again

Thanks for the suggestions lads. It's hard to diagnose a problem from hundreds of miles away
