ady2k5
Hello allI've been currently looking at a website and been in contact with the guy who works at this company in Japan via email. He tends to get quite a few Glanza's in and gives plenty of information about them with plenty of pictures and any negative points i.e. marks on the bodywork. The main problem is that once i pay him and the car arrives here there is a major dilemma to overcome. Basically as i am not a dealer and will be buying privately. As far as i know when the car comes here i can just get a trailer to bring it back home and leave it in a garage. However the main problem is when your insuring and registering the car as they link with each other. Basically i wont be able to register the car unless i can show the DVLA my insurance documents, and i wont be able to insure the car unless the car is registered and has a number plate on it.So what can be done, basically i can't see any way around it, unless i have traders insurance for just 1 car.Has anybody else been in this situation or would know what i can do to overcome the problem? Thanks
jon5698
It depends on the age of the car mate if it is below 1998 then you only need an mot, but if you go after 1998 you will need to sva test the car and it needs to be standard. You will need to trailer your car to get mot'd then apply for your registration plates once you have it mot'd. You wil only need your insurance documents once your car is mot'd and has plates then you can tax it. Hope this helps
paul w
The car can be MOT'd and insured on the chassis number. It's not hard to do just a pain in the ass. For the MOT it'll need a rear fog at a minimum.
nathy boy
hey pal,i have just imported my ep82 gt myself, basically you have to pick your car up from the dock on a trailor, get it mot'd then insure your car on the chassis number, then go to the dvla with the insurance document, the mot, the proof of customs payment, the japanese export document and the v55/5 form (from dvla)to register a imported vehice. These is a 50 pound registration fee and you pay to tax 6/12 months. If you ring the dvla you can ask for an import pack and it explains it all.Hope this helps! NightSpirit
I'll add to this...You buy the car, pay for it with the FOB price...you then get the docks sent to you in the post (usually recorded), you need this to release the car. When the car arrives at the docks you have to take the documents with you to release the car plus pay all the charges etc...then you CAN drive the car away aslong as it's insured (can insure on the chassis number) and the chassis number is written clearly on front and rear screens for the police to see if you do anything naughty. Then you have the bits to do like speedo and rear fog, then if it's over 10 years old, an MOT, newer, SVA...then reg etc.Or you can pay someone like me, who imports cars to order to do the job for you and deliver it to your door with our without number plates and tax. SiCaln
do u not mean under 10yrs old mate?! sorry if i'm wrong
NightSpirit
If the car you import is under 10 years old (date of first reg in Japan) then you need an SVA, if it's over 10years old...mot only.So ideally, you'd import a car registered before feb-march 1998...allowing 6-8 weeks for shipping etc. If you did buy a car that's say 1999...you could...if you really didn't want to pay for the SVA, just garage it till it's over 10 years Also, be careful when you buy from Jap sales, if myself or another importer brings a car over, we in most cases have the car checked out first to make sure all is legit...I'm such a whore

It'll be good because that'll save me around £100 to get it back on a trailer. Can i defo get the car insured with only the chassis number insurance companies have never asked me for this and its always been a registration number. Thanks

You shouldn't encounter any real problems, just make sure you take maritime insurance, battery pack, oil, water etc etc etc when you plan to collect the car. Alternatively, I can sort it out for you if you get stuck Mark

Sparky
Dont you already have a Glanza ady2k5?
ady2k5
Dont you already have a Glanza ady2k5? Yes i do, but i've been tempted by some of the modified examples. I can get a modified example for the same price of what i paid for my standard one which includes all the relevant costs excluding insurance and road tax.
