Correct me if I'm wrong but up to 1992/3 you don't need a cat test but then they started doing cat tests and after 1995 you certainly need one if you can't find a exact engine engine number and it's between 93/95 for a cat test then it drops down to the pre cat test.

After 1995 you should have a cat test? This is how I've understood the mot manual

As far as I'm aware, if the engine code doesn't match up to a UK engine code than the car doesn't need a full emission test.

That's correct if you can't find the exact engine number (missing) or not a match then it can drop down to a pre cat test.
