mikey4410
I have my eye on a cheap apparently working condition gearbox.i can get it for a good price and worth a punt.instead of wasting 3-4 hours fitting it to find it doesnt work, do they come apart quite easily and are they "checkable" ie can I open it and see if parts are badly worn and/or syncros going.please help.any advice would be marvelous
Ryan_EP82 GT
Yea you can your looking for damage to teeth on the gold/bronze synchro rings, also check they move freely toward the gear they select, check the smaller teeth that the synchro actually engages as well

Mad Mike EP82
Anybody else help ?Depends how easy 5th gear comes off. Rebuilding is not that hard with the right tools, cleaning everything is boring and time consuming.
5e colin
not to hard just dont misplace any cogs they have to do back on in the right position
Ryan_EP82 GT
Havent did our gearbox Mikey but fwd ones generally arent too bad but get a good proper fifth gear puller as I heard they can break if not removed properly mate.Tbh theres plenty of cogs as colin says just line then all out one after another as you remove then and youll be alright
daniel_g
You dont need to totally strip it down to inspect it. The state of the oil and the amount of shite on the magnet will tell you a lot. Once the 5th assy is off the main cover will come off and you can pull out the gears, diff etc.I do a fair few gearboxes in work and they can look a bit daunting the first few times. Last one i did was a 4wd 6 speed Hyundai box, they are all more or less the same you get the idea.

daniel_g
Ive none of starlet boxes but Taggys guide should give you a good idea. http://www.ukstarletowners.com/topic/59358-a-guide-to-fit-an-aftermarket-quaife-lsd/
morgey
Done a few with my mate, use taggys guide and you can see the majority but theres always the chance that the cones on the synchro could be the issue. I just rebuilt my 6 speed box (major 2nd gear crunch) and had the assembled gearsets checked over by someone who does it as his profession and he advised on some new selector hubs (1st/2nd and 3/4th) as the teeth were slightly worn and could be causing the issue but didnt think that would be the sole cause of the crunchSo I decided to do the advised bits and the synchros whilst it was apart, good thing i did becuase 2nd gear synchro looked like this...There was no way you could tell that this had happened, with out stripping it down there were no signs of damage other than when driven. Luckily my mate has the gear to do this stuff at his work and i even went in and helped out so i didnt have to pay. But J R Dains (local place to me) charge £250 to strip down inspect and rebuild a box then you have parts ontop of that.
