NightSpirit
As the title suggests, I'm currently in the process of getting to grips with some video equipment to record various driving/racing activities in the EP. Being new to the world of the camcorder, I went for a Sony DCR SR90e...the first cam Sony did with a HDD. The mount I use is a Hague SM1 Camcorder Suction Mount. My problem is, that even in the Glanza (road suspension not coilovers) because of the anti-shock system on the camcorder that stops the recording if a drop is detected (mercury switch?) the recording keeps cutting out on random bends/bumps.So, can I improve the shock absorbtion on the mount by fitting foam or something to the baseplate, or do I need a different cam. I don't want to use tapes or mini DV, would like to keep HDD due to record times. What do you use for recording your racing/driving (has to be TV/DVD quality) and does anyone know of a good anti-shock matt/material?Mark
Guest Enzo
funny you should say that, uploaded a vid of me onto the server last night in a ferrari to test out my incar recording equipment, i have four bullet cams and a processor that feeds into the harddrive, meaning i can get three images(pedals, dials and front view) onto the screanright now i use a suction mount on the back window , when i get home il post the link off of my server to download, its nothing special but you can see the camera within camera
DavidAshton
Im well into video production, been filming skateboarding on a high level the last few years so got myself a decent 3ccd camera and various other bits. Ive been thinking about filming something with the car. Was wondering about mounting the camera. What i was thinking of was mounting it on a standard tripod on the back seat like two legs in the rear foot well and on leg on the rear seat. If i get it secured down i was thinking the back seats would absorb most of the bumps and with steady shot on the camera it might not look too bad. Think i may give it a try soon.Is there much of a car filming scene type of thing? Like specific equipment available and stuff?
Guest Enzo
yes there are a few sites that sell bullet cams for helmets and cars etcive also seen your idea with the tripod in action, that would absorb some of the shakes i think
NightSpirit
I'll upload my video in the next few days too...again nothing special just a tester.I used to do some video production and enjoy getting stuck in to Premiere..great package imo. I'll be doing a project ep82 DVD soon if all goes well, but that's an exercise getting ready for the 'Ring trip in the summer when we're going to sell a DVD of the EP and other cars racing to and from the 'Ring...Your 3CCD cam (take it that's a JVC?) does that have a HDD. Friend has one of those and says it's never skipped once, will test his this weekend and see if it's true. If I just need a new cam, I'll sell this one and buy another but hate to admit defeat as the cam is very good and easy to use
Guest Enzo
is there any space left to go on this trip to the ring or the alps im very keen to take the track ep and also my recording equipment, would be great craic?
NightSpirit
Hi Enzo,I'll ask the other chaps their opinion, but I can't see why not? We're heading there for 5 days in total, first day/night is in Holland at my in-laws...then on to the 'Ring for 2 days, then depending on the state of the cars and ourselves, either staying local and exploring the area or heading the 380km to the Alps for some hardcore video action. So far we have an R32 GTR, possibly a Supra TT and a superbike...all people I know and trust.Mark

NightSpirit
Cool..the one I use is used by 'Driven' so should be up to the job. I've found a company that are willing to send me a sample of some 'poron' (not pron or porn) which is an anti-shock polyurethane matting. Hopefully that'll absorb some of the high frequency shocks from the car?How much did your setup cost Enzo?
Guest Enzo
it was pretty expensive at just over £

No its not HDD its mini dv. Not had any problems with drop outs when filming skateboarding and that give the camera a bit a a hammering with all the vibrations and shit. Only time ive had drop outs is when its been hit. I think HDD tends to be more of a friendly user format and less for the higher end stuff.

MaccyD
www.fastfilms.co.ukthats where i got my suction mount, i just stick it on the windscreen hanging upside down then switch it over when i get it on the computer. i dont have any fancy equipment or editring software but then i only do it for fun. Mount cost about £35, bargain. Heres some cheesy vids ive done lol. this isnt so relevant but a cool video taken inside the rally car i helped to build during my summer job.
