Harry's new 4 door, 4efe+T (not so broken)

Recommended Posts

G'day guys and girls, first post here but have been lurking for a while :D

I was thinking recently about building a 4efte starlet as a project, but this popped up instead!

1997, 4efte converted starlet! unfortunately it put a rod through the block, but it still runs.

ended up getting it for a good price, so chucked it on a tow truck and got it back home....

as soon as i got it home, off came the ugly front lip and side skirts.

see the sneaky intercooler? 8)

Started to have a look at the wiring behind the head unit, and it was a mess. its been fitted with keyless entry, a bluetooth handsfree kit as well as the stereo. All the wires were cut when someone removed the headunit before sale.

im not impressed, surprised it didnt catch on fire or something. this is how it looks after a shopping bag full of wires was removed.

and thats where she sits currently! its nice to meet you all, and i look forward to your comments and suggestions :D

Im in Beaconsfield, near Fremantle. have already had a good read of your thread and its very interesting!

im going to put them and the lip on gumtree for $100 for the lot but if theres no takers, they are yours :)

we should go for a little cruise once I get this engine fixed :p

you wouldn't happen to have a bare long motor for cheap by any chance?

I think im going to fix it and keep it as a daily, found a dyno report in the car for it making 185hp before it blew up, theres been a LOT of time and money invested into the car so i think its got potential. il probably remove all the glanza bits and keep it stock looking.

Im Pretty sure it actually covers the temp guage, which is heaps worse

Good plan, the sleeper look is definitely a goodun.

You're right, I'm thinking of the UK spec clocks which have fuel on the left. I guess as long as you can see the needle it's okay? Does say a bit about the last owner though.

Well I have 2 EPs and 3 engines, but none FTE, and not able to sell my old 4E just yet, I'm using it to make my brackets... Once the good one is painted, I'll brobably break the beater. The boot is in good condition I think (I'll take another look today) if you want to swap the glanza's...

Nice to find someone local :)

Hey guys, little update.

went to see the folks down south on the weekend, so haven't done much.

Did what I was dreading and dug further, only to find this :bad:

so much wire tapping going on here its not funny. no wonder there was 3 noise cancellers behind the head unit alone.

A question for you electrical gurus, someone had installed an amp and tapped into the amps constant power feed for a few things like keyless entry, the head unit and another 2 wires whose purpose i'm not sure of. They haven't used the (blue/yellow stripe) constant power wire in toyotas own radio loom, so could i use that to power the few accessories if i run a fuse as well?

Also bought and got delivered the donor donk. FMuscle if you need any little bits and pieces hit me up. I don't think il need the pistons becausecos i'l hopefully be getting a thicker h/g for less compression. but i'm keen on the conrods! are they new or used? and how much :)

Didn't realise how heavy these small engines are till i had to move it around myself!

Seeing as I definitely don't have the skills let alone the tools to do this, i'm going to call wtfauto tomorrow for a quote to fix it and get a detune (from 185 to around 150) to protect things a little.

just had a quick poke around in the shed and hooked the battery back up since it was nearly charged, and its pretty much all spot on!

despite the wiring mess, all lights and central locking work bar the front park lights and the indicator flash upon unlock/lock.

Great news for me, now i can just clean it up, cap everything off and install a headunit, and put it back together again!

think im going to keep the rear spoiler and lights, sorry! :)

Bit of an update, after doing some reading here about turboing the 4efe have decided that me and my mate who are doing the engine swap will just be dropping the whole 4efe in, much less hassle.

Problem is im not sure if the current engine is 4efte or 4efe with bolt ons? is there any way i can tell without pulling it apart?

what made me think it might be 4efe is that it has a home made exhaust mani and a half sized radiator, but im not sure.

its pretty bunky...

A couple of days past, and we decided to get started. first things first, heres a video of it running: =@

Unbolting all the shiz and ready to come out, feat: The Wizard (aka Adam)

11056719_10205650929205803_810363441_n_z

Once the motor and box was out we started stripping it down, its got an LSD box! we also found out the hole in the front of the block was nothing compared to the carnage at the back...

It had split the block and a few pieces were missing, we took the sump off and it look what came off with it

11063262_10205650929285805_562977784_n_z

Bit of info for those guys using fte parts for an n/a motor: the oil filter relocator on the fte block has 3 studs surrounding it, and the n/a motor we used does not have these.

(not my pic):

781260146a7120622861l.jpg

So the wizard had to tap into the block to secure the relocator:

He did an awesome job! and it looks factory.

and thats roughly how it sits at the moment, new engine is on a stand mostly put together, needs new clutch installed, rear main changed and lsd gearbox oil before chucking it back in the car.

more updates soon
