For something like that to happen it wouldnt have been the high rpm that killed it, more like the sudden change in inertia. D

Just out of curiousity, is it definitely the fan not working? Zoe's gt acted up a while back, ended up being a stuck thermostat, make sure the temp sender is working aswell, start the car and remove the plug, if the fan kicks in, its working. D

1.4 105bhp, mate has the 2.0td, last dynoed at 132bhp, manages to keep up at first but due to the far better rev range of the petrol mine just leaves it, also being lighter too, runs rings round his on bends. Only good thing about the diesels is some have the vented brake setup, do pull well though, would definitely have one as a daily, but due to getting a company car soon i've gotta make way, cant keep 3 cars at the house lol, otherwise i'd keep mine D

Wouldnt worry about it then, only if in the red for a long period of time should you worry, the smell is just the coolant starting to boil. Might be worth changing the coolant as it will have lost its properties if overheated. And wouldnt know lol, I do all work myself. D

Do a compression test, if it was gonna do any damage it would do it already. If you're that worried, have the gasket replaced for good measure, maybe go for an athena incase you decide to chase more power. D

How did you manage to smash between the ring lands lol? Never seen that before, hairline cracks, slipped rings but never that before! Has it damaged the bores at all? D
