  1. Just get the tester to put the milage through as miles and not kilometers, the higher the milage the more lea way you get to a certain extent as it's classed as a worn engine, my 97 glanza passed with 138,000 "miles" on the clock and no cat!
  2. Seems more like plastic to me mate, taking the head up to the engineers tomorrow to get it checked over. I used blue hylomar on the sump so it's not that.
  3. Anyone?? There seems to be some copper filings in the sump too. i've checked all the pistons, big end shells and all are fine. Any suggesgions?? TIA, Chris.
  4. Hi peeps, As some of my know i've been having a bit of trouble with the car so thought i'd pull the engine apart today. What was happening was when i drove at say 70mph, i backed off the gas for a few seconds and as soon as i touched the accelerator pedal the was a BIG puff of bluey/gray smoke from the exhaust. Now i removed the cylinder head and notices that the piston top on cylinder 3 seemed a little greasey so i took the sump off and took the pistons out. The ring gaps on piston 3 were quite close together (see pic) The ring gaps were at about 35 degrees to eachother... could this be
  5. What would a worn guide do?? i've never done anything with valve guides before.
  6. Hi Mate, i ran it on tesco own brand mineral oil as i was changing the oil every 250 miles, then at 750 miles i put some magnatec in and ran it for 400 miles then i put mobil 1 in. I't used about a litre or so of oil in 300 miles so it's fairly going through it. I had the valve stem seals done at my local engineers, when i put the head on origionally i noticed the pcv to mani pipe was split so i cut it and bunged the mani side to stop it sucking in air. what i was thinking is that because the pcv pipe was blocked at the mani it's caused too much negative pressure when the car is at speed w
  7. Kinda mate, it doesn't smoke from cold or at idle but when driving it at speed, i back off the throttle for a few seconds and then touch the accelerator pedal i get a big puff of blue/grey smoke for a couple of seconds then it clears, Car runs fine but smokey on run down. What's a mono meter mate?? Cheers, Chris.
  8. Just realised something, i'd pulled the pcv pipe off and blanked the pipe on the intake mani a while back, venting the pcv on the rocker cover to atmosphere. Would this cause enough negative pressure from run down at speed to burst the valve stem seals?? I've done a cold compression test and got 175psi on all 4 cylinders and a hot one made 180psi on all 4 so i don't think it's the rings/ bores. A mechanic mate said it's possibly the bores are slightly oval and that's why it's smokey but would this not loose compression?? Any thoughts guys??
  9. Are the tires inflated correctly and have you had the tracking done mate??
  10. Fuckin hell man, i thought it was the police man from that tv show "alo alo" Muppet!! he only lives a mile or so from me too!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Hi rob, nah no way of checking for blowby, i sold my leak down tester last year as i thought i wouldn't need it lol. I built it but had the head, block and crank done at my local engineers place, only thing i can think of is that i haven't clocked a ring or something like that. I don't have any catch can or anything, the breather and pcvare both venting to atmosphere. If i keep it in say 4th at 70-80 there's a faint stream of blue smoke behind me, if i back off for 5-10 seconds then accelerate again it smokes like a bitch then clears up a few seconds later. I just had the valves ground in
  12. I'll do a hot one when i get home, yeah throttle was fully open mate, it's bugging the shit out of me. it's only done 1500 mile since it was rebuilt (new rings & hone, shells, mains, pumps, oil seals ect) So any help is much apreciated!
  13. yeah mate the comp test showed 175psi ocross all 4 cylinders (cold) Luke, this is quite a bit of smoke (bluey/gray colour), i'm running a blitz access at 0.7bar Any ideas? it doesn't smoke till you get off the power for a few seconds or so then touch the throttle again
  14. Yeah, i've tried 3 turbos now and the smat thing happens... foot down, back off for a few seconds and touch the accelerator pedal and there's a plume of smoke from the exhaust, it's just had a full rebuild and new valve stem seals.
  15. Can i reuse a 1.4mm athena metal head gasket? (only been on the car 3 weeks) and the car's still smoket so need to pull the head off and sort it. Hope i can because i don't wanna spend another £110 on another!!
  16. I think it's just an m9 spline socket from memory ( ebay for £ Head gasket's on it's way bud, posted it at lunchtime Does anyone know if you can reuse the multi layer steel athena gaskets??
  17. ;) ;) . they're pretty good like bud, not worth more than 5-600 imo. What's happening with yours shaun?
  18. I've got a stock headgasket mate if you need it (genuine toyota)
  19. Which seals do you need? the top o'rings? might have some of those
  20. Micky my friend i owe you a large beer!!! 30 seconds and the car now ticks over at 750 rpm for the first time since i bought it! lol I didn't even know the screw was there! I'd take the intake pipe off the manifold and see where the butterfly is positioned, i.e fully closed or slightly open, to see what the throttle position is. When you rev it does it take a while for the revs to drop? if the revs take longer than usual to drop it usually points to an air leak, if it's just high tick over i'd say the same as micky, swap the icv over/dismantle yours and see if it's damaged inside.
  21. Sorry to hijack but what screw? i set my timing to 10BTDC and it ticks over at 1250, can't see any leaks either. is the inlet mani gasket on ok/ not damaged?
  22. Mine's just been built and makes 175 psi acros all 4. i believe anything above 150 psi is ok so long as they're within 10% of eachother. Shaun did you get my pm mate Re- funds?
