Broadway_S
Hi, not so new to Starlet drivership, been driving the Broadway on and off since my 17th birthday it's now mine (2015 January). This month represents 16 years of driving the Starlet. Last year I covered over 15,000 miles between Jan 15 Jan 16 so it's done well!It is finally at the age of requiring some TLC: I've given it the Autosmart treatment but now the mechanics need some TLC.118,000+ miles still with original timing belt! As it is a non interference engine I'm just waiting for that to snap as I have heard some shocking stories about Timing belt servicing. Anyone own the Broadway or similar interest in routine service work in the Gloucestershire area?
Starlet__SR
What horror stories? The timing belt on these is a doddle and can be done within an hour.
Broadway_S
What horror stories? The timing belt on these is a doddle and can be done within an hour.Hi, I read a timing belt service failed after 18 months with limited mileage, the garage said 'warranty' expired etc and as it was a 60k service interval and that it only covered 8k it was suggested poor workmanship.Perhaps I am just worried that my perception of the J in the vin code represents they got it right in Japan first time and due to corrosion of parts in the area getting it back 'right' may actually be more difficult without a rebuild/replacement of various nuts bolts and any other aspects. Got that 'run it into the ground' feeling based on shoddy workmanship in the area.Oh and of course I am coming from an ignorant background in changing a timing belt. akyakapotter
I believe n/a are not an interference engine due do the fact the pistons are domed. well that's what I'm lead to believe.Cheers nick.
morgey
Really pushing your luck with that belt. Bit of a grey area regarding being an interference engine some say they are some disagree. I would 100% change it before you snap it just to save yourself any possible damage.
ChristopherEP70
I'd definitely be doing the belt before it snapped. I always went by changing it every 60 thousand miles or every 6 years. I jumped the timing at 120kph on the motorway in one of my starlets put on a new belt with no problems.
ryan lang
the n/a is a non interference engine. i ran the higher lifting 5efhe cams in mine and the belt jumped off and i drove it home with the timing out. fitted a new timing belt, problem solved.
