Engine Help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Needing a bit...a lot of help and advice. I was driving home lastnight and boom went my engine, loads of metal, black smoke the lot from under my car. Got my car (96 EP91 Glanza V) to my dads friends garage today. They took one look at it and said my engine is fu**ed. So the issue is i'm now looking for a new engine, does a standard engine block from say a EP91 starlet n/a drop in? I'm not sure what to do or where to go?? Money isnt a big issue but on the other hand i dont want to be ripped off! any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers

Rick

The first thing I'd be doing is identifying the cause of the problem to make sure it doesn't happen again.

You need a 4EFTE engine, the 4EFE from the N/A Starlets have different internals amongst other things, so it's not a direct fit.

hi mate its me whos breaking the car. "4efte head, 70k and the 5efe bottom end 60k" this is how you make a 5efte there is no such thing as standard and the numbers are the millage. yeh it will drop straight in but youll need to use your manual gearbox mate. im only in carnoustie so its not far to get it transported bud.

It's still worth revisiting this to find out what happened mate. Last thing you need is for it to happen again.

I've seen a few conrod failures in the past with these engines and most of the time it is due to low oil. The fact you said it was rattling under load makes me think along these lines.

Only other things I can think of are extreme detonation (I'd expect the pistons to melt first) or a weakness in the rod/bearing from manufacture. Any signs of an oil leak on the blown engine?

Jay

Thanks mate. I seemed to find the rattle about 2-3 weeks after i got the car. Thing was I always kept a good eye on the oil, but come the last 2-3 weeks the car was going through oil quite fast n was a case of topping it up also the knock sensor was rather high on the fc hand commander, it was due to get checked out this week, as i knew some thing was wrong.. but i didnt think it would of been as bad as it was :D Its totally my fault at the first piont of when the oil was playing up i should of got it checked out. lesson lernt............ the hard way

Didn't realise she was modified mate. Knock is not a good thing, If you were seeing a good deal of it then that is another possible cause of engine failure. The noise you heard could have been denotation (sounds like a metallic pinging noise).
