Engine starting to sound tapety!

Since the blast down to JAE my engine has started to sound very tapety under strain! At first I thought it might just be low on oil but it was only 1/2 way between min and max so topped up but no better!

Anyone got any suggestions? Or is it time to start thinking rebuild?

Turbo time.........Is it al the time or just at startup and certain RPM?

My SR made a rattling sound on start up and from aboue 2.5k-4k only when under load and it turned out to be shells due to the oil seive clogging up

It's not as noticeable on startup mainly under load until you get the revs up! After that it's hard to tell if it's there or not as it's too loud! Lol

Mayeb try an engine flush and full oil change, then stick some 20/50w in it

I wouldnt flush it unless your 100% certain all seals and the engine are healthy may just make things worse

whats the mileage on it? Any recent work? What were your oil change intervals?

Check the all the fluids again, have a look thru the engine bay for anything loose check the crank pulley too its been known to split...if you cant find anything leave it be n monitor it n/a units are cheap and easy to pick up...you dont want to pull it apart and crate more work for yourself

just coming up to 105K its due a service now gets done every 6 months regardless of mileage doing about 12-14k a year! couldnt see anything when i checked but ill give it another once over tomorrow if not i might just drop the oil anyway!

yeah drop the oil and while your there have a good poke around if not dont worry too much about it my old one had 110k and i drove it like i stole it never missed a beat....you keep ontop of maintenace so yours should be grand.....on a side note you may want to change the timing belt now if it hasnt already been done

Thicker oil should quiet it down a bit

U can have the na from my ep95 if urs goes tits up mate, its coming out soon anyway. Its in good nick with around 65/70k on it. Its also a late spec 99 coilpack 4efewith jdm service history.

Could be valve clearences etc, mine sounds tappety when its hot on low idle, dissapears when you raise the revs. Think that is just the injectors though...
