ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 its like a dark white smoke, and when i put a piece of white card infront of it, there was quite a bit of wet soot, and this continues to happen all day no matter how much i drive it, so it cant just be condensation on start ups, and it hasnt exactly been cold the last 2 dayscould it be the headgasket? if not what else could it be? ste91 Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 How many miles on the engine? Valve stem seals? Although I'd have thought burning oil would give off more of a blue colour. Quote
ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 it seems to change color to be honest mate, just had a new headgasket put on it, and its up to about 100 since then, but overall its 115k on it. it smells like burning oil, but its way to thin to be oil so i think its a mix of bothsometimes its like a yellowy white, sometimes its pure white, i even had black smoke yesterday. ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 havent checked the water, but theres alot of it coming out of the exhaust, definitely losing oil though Quote
GT Phayer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 did you have the head skimmed when the gasket was done ? also why was the head gasket changed ? Quote
ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 no, didnt get it skimmed. head gasket was only replaced due to testing a 4efte ported head etc, which was also burning oil.now we put the original head back on with another new headgasket Quote
GT Phayer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 and i take it the engines not missfiring ? Quote
ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 yup no missfire from the engine, i changed the plugs and leads tuesday night Quote
GT Phayer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 check to see if your loosing water mate Quote
ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 okay mate, will do in the morning Quote
GT Phayer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 stupid question i know but you did use a new gasket and do it up properly right >? Quote
ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 yeah new gasket both times, and also torque'd it down Quote
ryan lang Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 okay mate, will update the thread once ive checked it tomorrow Quote
ryan lang Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 no loss of water mate :/ just a lot of white smoke, and black towards the top end of the rev range :/ Quote
Starlet__SR Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 You sure its just not all the crap blowing through? D Quote
Asad Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 valve stem seals replaced? if not its them....mine does it the piece of shit what are your plugs like? let me guess nice n sooty n black?? Quote
ryan lang Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 no, my oil level is dropping too, need a compression test to see if its the rings :/ unsure if both heads will have had stem seal issues, because its my standard head back on there now :/ which had no problems before it came off :/yeah they were black, havent checked the new 1s :/ Quote
Asad Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 comp wont tell you anything 1) the oil ring is at the bottom, the comp ring is at the top and thats what you`ll be testing2) if its your valve stem seals there will be oil in the cylinder anyway which will impair your readings Quote
ryan lang Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 yeah i suppose dude. getting annoying now though, because the engine was fine before we took the original head off, and its been shite ever since Quote
Asad Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 im going to replace my valve stem seals soon without taking the head off, but yeah if you rev it nice n slowly it will be fine especially when cold....rag it and look thru your rear view youll see a cloud of smoke i did a comp test on mine 200 across all cylinders, plugs were black...the previous owner didnt drive the car as hard as i do thats why it wasnt apparent when i first got it + the crank seal was leaking so i had oil loss anyway if you want get some heavy weight oil from morrisons (asda dont have it) get 15w50 its really cheap apparently to tide you over check the oil every other time you drive and youll be grand till you can afford to fix it Quote
GlanzaJim Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 i had loads smoke come out of mine and i found out it was piston ring, to try just lift out your dip stick and rev it, and if smoke blows out the tube its a ring Quote
ryan lang Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 asad, it smokes constantly, on idle, and all through the rev rangeand cheers jamie, ill try that this afternoon Quote
