Driving from Spain to UK/Shipping car from spain?

Recommended Posts

It's a bit of a random this, but i'm wondering if anyone has done a similar thing or has any advice on this.

Basically when I was little kid, my uncle moved away to Barcelona and brought his escort xr3i convertible with him. It's a mint black F reg, and I was always promised it when I was 17. My uncle and my mum decided to wait til I was 21 because of insurance reasons, and the cars not getting used, so my dream car as a child is basically waiting for me to collect it.

Does anyone have any advice about going about this? as I don't think it will have any form of mot and tax, but the thought of owning a mint standard xr3 which would classify for classic car insurance next year, is one that appeals to me. :D

(the starlet will be staying obviously)

You may have a bit of an issue importing it here as DVLA say it has to be less than 10 years old? You may have to pay extra and have extra checks, im not sure what the rules are around cars that are originally from the UK though :) Might be worth giving them a call and finding out, last time i spoke to them they were really helpful :)

Drive it, awesome experience, get breakdown cover and euro insurance and do it :-p will need to fill in allthe paper work for re importing though

that's the plan, sounds like it works out a lot cheaper than shipping over and i'll feel a bit like danny dyer in the business, just a bit worried about driving on the wrong side of the road haha

Keep it out there and use it for a free hire car when you go on holiday ;)

i would do, but i think i needs some work doing, which is more the fun, which i'm going to have ask my uncle what's up, i just haven't pressured him as he's beat cancer and it's just come back again.

Book a ferry from Santander to Plymouth and drive it home then re register it dude, we drive to our place in Portugal once a year

wicked, do you know how much the ferry costs exactly? i'm not 21 until early next year, so it's the plan of getting funds together to go and collect her :D i'm going to have to chase up whether it's on english plates still or not, as it's been garaged for a long time.

OK.

Reason I say that is if so, then it won't need re-registering when coming back if it is still registered, although I imagine it has been SORNED for a while and that'll need sorting out. Should just be simple MOT, Insure and Tax job otherwise

Im just going by what i read on DVLA with regards to importing from Spain specifically. I have no idea of the reasons behind it, im just going by what I read. Hence why i said may be better off to ring DVLA. :pardon:

I flew over to Amsterdam and drove my ep85 back. Just got it insured by the chassis number and had no problem driving it over. Once I had it in Scotland I just had to get an mot and fill out some forms to get the uk plates and registered that was it.
