Cheznutter
as above how easy would it be to make a new one out of a standard flywheel is it even possible ?
AdamB
You can do it by skimming and drilling it, buts its deffinately not something I would recommend, it will put a lot of stress raisers in the material and by the time you pay for the machine work and heat treatments, you could have bought a genuine lightweight one. Cheznutter
how would it work if i were to drill it myself would I be able to take enough weight out of it to make a difference ? or would I be wasting my time I was thinking thatbi could do a load to make available as kind of a group buy. daniel_g
I got a quote of 70 quid from a machine shop to lighten & balance a standard one. You cant just got drilling holes in it really it has to be balanced with the clutch, or ideally with the crank too.
Rob H@RCH Engineering
this is why drilling them and machining them is a good idea lol it gives people something to have a good laugh at! http://www.youtube.com/embed/n0TxZFDLa3w
motion
my flywheel have been lighten and balanced by a professional to a weight of 8 lbsmounted since 2 years and about 6.000 kmgot no problems. I have paid 90£ Don't do it yourself!!!
The Toffinator
As above do not do it yourself will probably go wrong! My machine shop did mine when they balanced the crank and clutch and they took a hefty amount of material off, they do loads of them and they have never failed before
Chops
I cut the flywheel down from 8kgs to about 4.5 with a lathe on my old micra, never had an issue with it after. the micra did die in the end mind you lol (but that was rust)
