Tools req for cambelt & advice please!

Recommended Posts

So my v hit 100k km last month, and I need to do a cambelt change!

First question- any specialist tools I need? Got a toolbox full of tools at work but anything special I need?

Second question- it's only done 100k km, do o really need to change water pump? Or is it easy to get to, to do at a later date? (Moneys tight atm thanks to my g/box giving up on me!)

Belt tensioner and idler- need to be replaced or just precautions?

Bonus question!- removed my A/C but Still have the pump on the engine, do I just remove the pump and fit the non A/c belt, or is there more too It than that?

Thanks guys! :)

Try to get a shot of a battery gun for taking the crank bolt off, also watch when removing the pulley not to chip it.

The rest can be done with normal workshop tools.

And yeah best to change the lot, saves you doing the same job twice.

I'd get a rattle gun for the pulley bolt, but it's not required. You can also use a tool which holds the pulley by slotting into the two holes on the face... It's quite tricky to get the pulley off without chipping it usually. It took me about half an hour to remove one last night and ended up chipping it lol, it's not a massive problem and realistically not even noticeable (with regards to balance). In the end though we did make a custom pulley puller to remove them after the hassle. I'll upload a photo of it later to give you an idea.

As for the rest of it, it's pretty straight forward if you've done a belt before. Make sure to line the cam up with the 4E hole and the crank gear has a mark in line with the oil pump.

Water pump isn't related to the cam belt and is quite easy to change from underneath. You would have to remove both the ancillary belts again but that's all.

I'd consider changing the crank seal as 5T4R7ET N/A suggested as they do leak more often than not.

Tensioner and idler I'd recommend if you're not sure how old they are. I've changed a few that were noisy.

Aaddzz123, so to do the water pump I won't have to remove cambelt again? I'm guessing it's run by an aux belt?

Hope so! Lol

My crank seal isn't leaking yet, but if the budget isn't too tight ill replace!

I've got access to battery and air gun so hopefully the pulley bolt shouldn't be hard, as for the pulley any tips on "how not to" lol,

thanks for the help by the way guys, much appreciated

Nope the water pump runs off the same belt as the alternator. Few tips from memory would be to keep the hard pipe connected to the housing, take the rubber hose off the end of it, unbolt the hard pipe from the block, unbolt the 3 nuts that bolt the pump housing to the block and take it all off as one unit. You cannot take the pump off with the engine mount in the way or something. I can't remember exactly... I think the alternator has to come off too so that the pump can fit down the back, but it's only a few bolts.

For the sake of £30 it's well worth doing the water pump at the same time mate.

One of the bolts holding the pump on is underneather the crankshaft pulley and that will need removing before access to the pumpo can be amde. Whilst you can do this with the cam belt intact it's just easier whilst it's all off. And it's like £30. sSo why not

Not sure what you're on about mate? The water pump is on the back of the engine and is literally nothing to do with the cambelt lol.

He's pointing the fact that the crank pulley, the one driving the water pump not the cambelt, is blocking the access to one or two blots of the water pump itself.
That is if you do the pump itself witout removing the housing. If you remove the housing you don't need to remove the pulley, but the upper alternator bracket. Either way, both the accessory belts need to come off.

Water pump will be replaced as soon as I free up some funds, just not got the cash spare to do it this month as I had to pay out for my gearbox refurb!

Going to wait till I can afford water pump before I change the cambelt for good measure anyway, just going to use the scooter for commuting Costa alot less in fuel than the glanza that's for sure!
