Charlie28
Right, so as most of you know the forged engine I have suffered a piston ring failure and there are some DET marks on the top of a couple of the pistons. They look very minor but if I was able to just buy new rings and clean up these pistons would it be safe to use them?Or is it worth spending £500 on a new set?
funny onion
Just get a full set out of an engine with a blown bottom end or something. While they're out you may as well put a better set back in :/
Charlie28
There Ross racing pistons. You think it's worth replacing them?
funny onion
Sorry- I totally didn't read the first few lines i just looked at the pictures haha If they're forged then i'd clean them up and put new rings on them. Ideally you would want to replace but if you don't want to spend that much money (which i wouldn't) i'd try a new set of rings and a clean up. Why has it been det'ing? is it mapped? It was Rob Ebbs engine and wasn't mapped correctly hence the DET.
funny onion
Ah right that's ok then as long as you know the reason why they are there. As above i'd clean them up, new rings and put them back in. The purists will no doubt come storming along saying how you shouldn't use them anymore etc etc but from a realistic point of view i would...
Charlie28
Think i'll give them a good clean and see how they look!
mikey4410
sorry what is it we are looking at on that piston ??
mikey4410
its ok I just looked it up on google.
mikey4410
theres ALOT worse on google images.looks asif the piston tops have been pebble dashed .madness.
GP82
The main thing after you clean them is to measure the piston to confirm they are useable if a piston ring has gone.
Calum122
I've seen/used worse. If you clean that up with a polishing mop then I bet that will look like new. Then as people say, check to see if it's within tolerances. If it is then it's good to go
Mickey The Fish
Get them chemically dipped at your local machine shop, only costs about £10/£15. You'll be able to see any damage and check the tolerances before you polish them. Plus it'll clean out all the carbon from the piston ring grooves etc.
Calum122
Above better advice lol
maddox710
Defo not det Charlie as said before clean them up, just leave them to soak in oven cleaner for abit that's great on grime
AdamB
Don't forget the bores will need a hone otherwise the rings will never seal against the bore properly. Them pistons look ok, as above I would get them cleaned up and check all other area's of the pistons, make sure their in tolerence and away you go.
5e colin
just sand away the blow out of piston metal ( on piston ring gap ) you dont want it rubbing the bore atleast that looks like it to me in the pick at 6 o clock
Charlie28
I'll take them to the machine shop and get them cleaned and checked when I take the block to be honed. I'll drop speedvision a message and see if they can get me the rings
