You could always do it by getting little sticky paper and writing on them and sticking them to each sensor as you take them off, might be a good start and a little easier when putting it back together

There shouldn't be a problem with the electrics as you would be putting the same engine in and its the same loom that runs it (4EFTE loom to 4EFTE engine, you should be able to put a new one in and just drive), so all connectors would be fine.

Just be careful not to damage any of the clips or the wires when taking them or the engine out. Also probably best to do as above and label the wires with a marker and masking tape and put bolts etc in labelled bags.

A couple of long ways which would definatley tell you, would be the size of the clutch (the 4EFTE one is bigger 212mm I think) and you could take the sump off and see the marking on the crank, I think the 4EFTE ones are marked as 4ET and the 4EFE ones as 4E. But failing that you could check each engine side by side and see the vacum lines and the differences. Or you could take the engine number off the block (I thinks it sticks out from the block above the distributor and then check with Toyota and see what they have it as (This would involve the least work and Toyota should know). Also have a search online and see if there are othe ways.
