  1. Ok so got the car back together, I am doing the timing but I have come across a small problem with the timing setup. I cant seem to figure out how the hell the idler no.1 pulley is hooked up to the spring. I cant seem to get any decent spring tension on it to tension the belt. Has anyone got a pic of the oil pump with the clip attached that the spring hooks onto, i need to see what position it goes in, this oil pump has no markings or indent to show which way around it goes, driving me nuts!!! Also just to make sure i dont cock this up, can i just verify i have timed it up correctly.
  2. Sounds like you know your stuff Adam! I have just put the head back on my car hoping to get it back together today touch wood and get a beer in!
  3. rebuilding my engine, weather is glorious today
  4. With the recent spate of people melting pistons on new builds etc I thought it was important to go over a few points so it helps other people from happening to them and costing them an expensive rebuild. I found a REALLY good video on youtube about it and its also helped me uderstand a few areas which i didnt get and also more importantly should you use a higher octane fuel on a car thats not mapped for it. He talks about what is detonation and how to prevent it The effects of having too much advance on your timing Reasons to reduce your compression ratio i.e use thicker head g
  5. Lol sorry there not that bad if you dont mess about with them if its cracked piston ringland (bit of metal on the sides of the piston) you will notice exhaust gasses in your head, if you take your oil cover off after just turning the engine off, do you get exhaust smoke in there? Watch this video i made of it, its also happened to mine.
  6. bloody hell thats a nice bay, now i am gonna have to go clean mine tomorrow as i feel so guilty after looking at that ha ha!
  7. it was torture it sitting there not being able to drive it, when i knew how much of a mad machine it was!! Strangely though it will be quicker when its back together as i found the boost leak when i took it apart on my external wastegate and explained why my boost was all over the shop when it was mapped.
  8. lol sorry your right hawwy, exhaust gas temp sensor!
  9. Ooo may take you up on that bad boy see how the car goes first. Ok more updates on my progress, Spent the afternoon gapping the piston rings, bloody tedious work i tell you, then fitted all the rings and pistons to rods etc in the living room A familure site with starlet ownership my fuckin engine in bits!! busy gapping the rings http://s422.photobucket.com/user/mctaggart999/media/IMAG0287_zpse9f11d34.jpg.html'> Finally finshed and have got all the new pistons on the rods with rings on, just need to fit them to the car now. http://s422.photobucket.com/
  10. another thing to note people using AFRs who were on about it earlier, an AFR will only tell you if you car is running lean, if you timing is out your internals (like mine and funny onions did) can literally melt do the excessive temps caused by incorrect timing. I beieve it would be much better to put in a EGT instead (exhaust gas temp sensor) this way you are covered from one sensor for both being able to identify a running lean situation (engine temps will be much higher than norm) and also poor timing will also be picked up. Defo gonna get an EGT sensor installed come thursday!!
  11. welcome to starlet ownership, they tend to blow up more often than most people have hot dinners...
  12. I just think the whole V-Power thing is a bit of a con by the fuel companies, Morgey hit the nail on the head all the boy racers stick it in their cars thinking it gives more power when in fact it doesnt. The ecu is pre programmed to run a stock map, no way is it going to actively adjust on the fly, would bring in way to much possibilty for error and damaging th engine for a road production vehicle. Unless you map with it, i think its a total waste of money
  13. I would have thought most road cars have static maps, i wouldnt have thought they would actively adjust the timing based on what fuel was in it? Maybe on high end performance cars
  14. I always wonder with V-Power or any higher octance fuel, that if half the people that actually put it in their cars realise that it wont make any difference to their cars performance unless its been mapped on it to start with. My mate always puts it in his Clio sport for track days but i have been arguing with him that it wont make any difference, unless the car can detect its got higher ron fuel in it to adjust the timing, he still does though lol!! Tell me if i am wrong but the extra octane just reduces detonation so you can have a more agressive timing on the car hence more power.
  15. lol bummer about the Rad, i bet you were like DAD!!!! ha ha
  16. well touch wood I will be at JAE, but i havent got any track time this year which is a bit shit, but guess i want to ensure the car is sorted first though
  17. bloody hell fair does it!! Mine isnt my daily so i didnt have such an urgency on it, plus it being forged the parts were bloody pricey, its been an expensive month, nearly £600 at TD, then a failed engine, ironiclly i bought another set of forged pistons from TD to replace the broken ones, agan another £470 and then i am back there again this Thursday, but in fairness they have said they will run it up free of charge to see if they can find what went wrong, otherwise it would have been another £250! As a mater of fact, it was the fact TD offered to retest it it free that made my mind u
  18. Cheers Grant Well i picked the car up earlier, bores have come up better than expected with only taking a 0.001" off so well chuffed, so bores are all good to go for new pistons and rings. I did start on it and manage to check the mains to ensure they were ok, but it was so windy outside loads of dust was getting thrown up and I didnt want to run the risk of getting tons of shit inside the engine, so finished up and will wait tomorrow. So tomorrow i plan to gap all the piston rings, which is a pain in the ass as each piston has 4 rings and an oil ring, so 16 rings of measruing and ga
  19. how did you get it running again so quick, did you have a spare engine and a garage?? and who fitted it lol!
  20. Yeah chill out Cherry, that wasnt a very helpful post!! as said before contact TD to sort out,
  21. i was running stock ecu, Fcd and rrfpr, so would have been rich as hell then put onto emanage blue Think i am defo putting a wideband on 2nd time around
  22. Just out of interest how long/many miles after the map did this happen?
  23. Its just one of those things i guess, could just be a complete coincidence, best speak to TD first, see if they can sort it out, i hope they can for you.
