ste91 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I got my KYB New SR Specials and TRD springs today, but the springs are rusty so I want to respray them. How do I get the springs off the shocks? Had a quick search on google and can't find anything... Quote
Mikey Jay Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Can't give you specific instructions, but basically need to put spring compressors on the springs, then take the top mount off.(be careful though)Someone correct me if I'm wrong? Quote
ste91 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 So it's not something I can do myself with just a socket set and spanners then. :/ Quote
Glanza_cl Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 you can get spring tentioners from halfords i think, but yeah as mikey said. Quote
ste91 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 I live next door to a garage so I'll just ask them to do it. Quote
BenV Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Dont do it without the correct tools, other wise you'll take your face off! Quote
paul w Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Use the garage You will regret it if you try doing it yourself! Most probably from a hospital bed! There will be some who say tie a rope around it etc but for your own sake get it done by a pro for a few quid Quote
BenV Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 ^ this guy talks sense, leave it to the pro's dude Quote
montanajr Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Just buy a set of spring clamps from Halfords, use them, then take them back! Compress the spring, and remove the top mount (get a very small spanner to hold the top of the shock where the flat is (you could use mole grips), then undo the big nut). Quote
Bourkey Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I can do it and i have done it many times. You do need spring compressors and you need a powerful impact drill to get the nuts off the top otherwise the shock piston will just spinn around. If you were closer i could have done them for you. I fitted a set of springs to Newbe's car the other week as well.Bourkey Quote
Idrees Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 It will take less than a minute from a garage dude, they'll just whip off the top nuts using the power rachet thingy! Quote
Starlet__SR Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 As many have said, unless capable of doing it yourself, take it to a garage, springs can be very nasty. Quote
iamlegend Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 ull be fine dude fitting them your self, even i did them my self it was quite fun actually!! new experiance Quote
ste91 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 cheers for the replies I wont be fitting them to my current Starlet though, waiting to get a new one with lower milage.Just wanted to "refresh" the suspension with some new paint mainly to protect it from further rusting.I'll either get the garage to do it or just borrow their spring clamp.
