Engine Cutting Out At Speed And Wont Hold Idle?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, my car has developed a rather annoying problem.

Basically the car wont hold idle, it just revs up and down and keeps nearly stalling for no aparant reason. And it also Cuts out everytime im driving and press the brake and clutch pedal to slow to a stop. For example if im doing 60MPH and i brake as if to slow down it cuts straight out and i have to restart it again before i completely stop.

If i leave it idling on my drive it eventually goes up and down that badly that it will cut out.

I dont know if you remember the problems i was having last year, but that was sorted once i fitted the new Idle control valve.

Does anyone Please have any idea what the problem could be as im loosing my rag with it to be honest and im even thinking about selling up because of it. Or is there anyone that could possibly take a look at it for me?

Thanks Guys

Liam

was it a brand new idle control valve? if so you can pretty much rule it out

you have a scoop yes? check the plugs for water like the glanza lads get

Yes mate cost me like £400 from Toyota aswell, yeah ive got a scoop mate but nothing much really gets through it.

I had this problem on my Saxo a while ago and it was an air flow meter, but I'm sure these cars don't have one.

I'm not sure what the equivalent is on the starlets? It's not the MAP sensor is it?

Sorry, hope this helps lol

Sounds promising mate, i want to know what this sensor is called so i can investigate further anyone know?

Cheers for the replies guys, car has had a new TPS Sensor new plugs and leads, new dizzy cap and rotor arm new ICV im just at the end of my theather with it to be honest. Its been to specialists like 10times to get all the vacuum checked and all pipes etc checked and cleaned and it just hasnt made any difference frown.gif

Been told it could be a bad earthing problem or my Timing belt could be due for replacment as its slighty stretched and thats why its missing timing when the engine revs suddenly go? Im no mechanic though so i have no idea.

i had some funny issues with my car abit different but neways just have a play about with your timing from the distributor, the 2 bolts that hold the distributor on simply mark around the bolts so you know where the dizzy was origionaly at, then move it around and see if it makes any difference as the dizzy can cause all sorts of problems.

i also have a problem with my idle as the stupid thing wont idle below 2k also check that no vaccum pipes are split or kinked?

if all else failes buy a 4efte and drop it in :p

Get a timing light on her with you having a new idle control valve you`ll be able to get it spot on...also old belts dont cause shit like that to happen so its either a tooth out or not the symptoms would be aparant from day one it wouldnt just appear out of no where

add a few more earths but earths usually cause poor/no starting and idle issues

still check down the plug holes to be on the safe side and the condition of the plugs

has your throttle body been messed around with? could be the throttle position sensor?

Cheers Asad, the timings been checked and adjusted after the rebuild and everything seems okay.

I was only wondering about the wiring/earths because im running a aftermarket headunit, aftermarket Tacho and HIDs and i believe these all use seperate earths, and my wirings a nightmare.

Plugs and leads have been done recently mate, along with the Dizzy Cap and the rotor arm. Also had a new TPS Sensor and the throttle body has been off and cleaned out and all the pipes going onto it have been replaced.

For idle Check your pcv valve clean and blow in it ,should only blow one way.

The old trick is to make an engine cut out switch by earthing the distributor so no one can steal the car , maybe one of your cables

shorting out some how around the distributor, even cracks or a seal letting water in ,

Worth a check.

When the new TPS was put on did you set it up properly checking resistance between the terminals using a multimeter & feeler gauges, as it sounds like the TPS is not set up right. Any fault codes come up if you do a diagnostic test

I had the same problem with the TPS not being on properly, my engine would rev/idle randomly and cut out over 70 on the motorway, chris ^ just adjusted it slightly as it was in the wrong position.

hope you can get it sorted mate

I think this TPS sounds like the problem to be honest, ill book it in at a local specialist and see what they say, Our mechanic at work fitted it though so i would of thought he would have set it up right. But you never no

Cheers for the replies guys!

Doubt its gonna be the battery mate, that was replaced recently!

Me and Keirz are gonna take a look at this TPS with his equipment from work, if nothing comes from it then it will be getting booked in at a specialist.
