For an £800 respray the job must be shit, loads of places I have been quoted by it been at least £2k!

These wheels were done properly, acid dipped and cleaned back to bare metal, primed, sprayed with loads of coats of lovely lambo orange, baked in an oven, laquered then baked again! You will not find a better finish!

They were also given a once every two weeks coat of rim wax to keep them looking spanking!

You simply cannot rattle can wheels properly!!....best finish & end of , PERIOD!! is a pro spray job with a decent spray gun!!..

I should no... been painting for years!, people don't understand that paint costs, & its not only the paint..there's thinners. hardner/ barcote etc etc!!..

So for example, i painted my whole rear bumper yesterday...it cost me £100 in paint/hardner etc & I sprayed the bumper myself!!..

Prepping wheels is a complete CRAP job & takes ages...& that's what takes time...if you prepped them yourself , then yes..you'll prob save a stackload.

Those wheels are a good price..if you like tango orange!! :p:thumbsup:

I agree with this (also work in a bodyshop) anyways back on topic, good luck with the sale :D

Cool man. I'm not hating or saying they're rubbish because I'm sure they're shit hot lol. Just saying its expensive for a set of rims refurbed lol. And I'm pretty sure Socks V was done for about £800. Thats a mint finish... Not so much where you go but who you know...

A good finish can be got with rattle cans, however I find it doesn't last, the paint never seems to take as well so chips easily, scratches easily as lacquer never fully hardens, and it is difficult to get a decent match, I think this is due to where you go though, and the lasting of it may be improved with using an oven?

Do like the wheels but I dunno if they would suit a white V?

I've also done painting for years and have all the equipment lol. If you buy your supplies in bulk like I imagine you do having done it for years, then you should be able to spread your cost over a set of rims down to about £40 if you work it out over the long run. I painted my bumper having spent £20ish on a small pot of colour and using left over high build and 2k clear from another job.... So the bumper cost me £20ish to do lol.... A bodyshop will have gallons and gallons of primer, clear coat, hardener, thinners, panel wipe and hundreds of sheets of paper and pads for the sanders, numerous tubs of bogo and fiberglass etc etc etc. So in the long run for a bodyshop, you can probably knock off about 20% of the cost if you were going to buy your stuff in quater litres lol... Not to mention claiming back VAT.

If you spent £100 just on paint for a bumper then either go to a different paint supplier or put it on thinner lol! :p.

As for not getting a pro finish with a can I've done numerous jobs with cans and had perfect blends and colour matches etc. If the nozzle is good and its mixed properly in the can it can sometimes be a lot easier to get a better finish with a can lol. For example spraying lower parts where the air line on a gun would get in the way. Like I experience a few times when repairing sills....

I'm saying all this in jest by the way lol. Don't want an argument. But £100 in paint for a bumper is overpriced, not being able to get a decent finish with a tinnie is a lie and £300 for 4 rims to be refurbed is a bit of a bum rape :p. You can get a full respray for £800 lol.

....... awaits abusive reply haha! :p

Eh...why but your just a Wee Boy!?..at 22!! lol....i'm a grisley old skool 40yo & well yes...being doing everything for years...then;)!!..don't be offended.

I spent nearly that amount as i needed quite a few items whilst i was there...their paint is £22+ vat per half litre...'Lechler' 2K...i got one litre & the rest of the parts/scotchbrites...p6/8/1000 etc etc stopper & some polish came to said amount...i don't get anything free anymore!.

I'm not just painting my bumper...there's a few more items i'm not happy with on the GT4.

As for wheels...i don't really waste my time faffing around with them anymore...esp when salt has attacked them!...there shotblasted & polyester coated...far superior for wheels...

Lol i wish i had a state of the art paint booth...but just have to do with my old garage!...& Grav-gun.

This finish could only be acheived with a decent gun i'm afraid...& still more parts to prep n paint...

Just bringing this back to life after a discussion on MattyD's wheel thread about paint jobs and their costs lol.

People saying that you can't get a decent finish with rattle cans... Well all of MY above jobs were done with rattle cans lol... I have had the gun and compressor set up for years but I did these with cans because with my position it was easier... I don't see any difference in the finish products if you do it properly? I'll upload some more pictures of jobs I've done with cans if I can find any.

I'm not really a wee boy lol. Little offended by the comment to be honest. And I don't understand what my age has to do with anything?

Anyway, not to spam Matt's thread anymore, I've commented on an old thread I started last year when I had just finished a bumper job... With rattle cans I might add :p ;). Happy to continue a light heated debate on there lol!

I've had one set of speedlines sandblasted and sprayed in a booth with a gun and compressor and a semi pro sprayer and one set done by sand paper and rattle cans by myself.

Upto the point of lacquering the finish was very similar. After lacquering as i did not have a heated room the lacquer seemed to shrink and gave me china effect wheels.

The difference in price £25-30 for 5 wheels vs £130 for 5 sand blasted and 4 sprayed

Also my hand sprayed wheels held up better to having tyres changed and stone chips.

its not that i dont like rattle cans, ive used them plenty of times, ive painted about 10 sets of wheels with rattle cans also painted my headlight air intake thingy with cans i just think u get a better finish doing it properly, for body shops its easier and faster to get a better finish with a proper spray gun also better for sanding back and polishing back up.

I agree with both of the above but I think the point where we differ is I'm simply saying the paint in a rattle can is no different. If you use rattle cans for paint and then a 2k clear from a gun the finish isn't going to be any different at all... And if you consider you can get 2k in cans now too, there isn't really anything you can do with a gun that you can't do with cans lol. Sure a gun is going to have a better fan, its going to be more cost effective and quicker to do... But my point is simply that you can get a mint finish that will last with rattle cans lol. Just use a 2k clear coat. :p

Yeah i agree if u rattle can the paint and spray gun the clear coat then its not gona be any different. So what do u do? rattle can the paint then use a spray gun for the lacquer? Body shops have to use water base paints now, by law (i think) witch is shite compared to 2k its also shit when your doing a repair on something thats been painted with water base, u get a hard edge thats a nightmare to get away.

Hey don't be offened pal, you done a great job on those parts esp the Mazda Bumper.... ...there are some TOP rattlers here & tbh..you can only get better as the years go by & further experience comes...i see some great painters here...yes if i can get away with it i'll rattle can all day...but me, i simply could not patch the edges of that bumper with silver..i tried & just could not blend it....so i painted the whole bumper.

Hope everyone had a great christmas by the way?...

It depends entirely on my situation/position etc as to which method I go for. For example the Mazda bumper, my friend (who owned the car) had already brought the primer and colour in rattle cans. So I used his primer and colour and finished it with 2k clear through my gun.... My bumper that I did a few months back, I used the gun for everything because I live back with my parents, everything was out and ready and it was cheaper and easier lol. I do normally use the gun for everything.... But in some cases a can is easier. Lottie is a member on here and earlier in the year she reversed over a kurb and put a big dent in her sill (LOL FAIL). So I pulled it out, cut it back, fiberglass and filler, smoothed it nicely and then used a rattle can to paint the whole sill and also blended it in using the can. Then I used (and struggled) the gun for 2k clear...... I think cans are shit hot to be honest lol. Pick it up and off you go.

I've never used water based paints. Never done work in a bodyshop lol. Just learnt what I know through trial and error, doing my own and friend's paint work as favors lol. Always enjoyed it so brought the better gear a few years ago.

I was only really offended at the wee boy comment and using my age against me lol. To be honest I think I was in a shitty mood lol! No grudges held :p..... Thanks :)! I lived in Cleethorpes when I did the bumper and my friend came from Nottingham (my home town) and wanted it doing in a bit of a rush. So I did 90% of that in the dark with the garage light :p. Fun times watching videos on phones and getting drunk during drying times lol!.... Silver is always a pain to blend. I didn't want the hassle with that bumper either so did the whole thing.

Christmas was nice thanks :)! How about yours?

See i had it in my head that you were using rattle cans for lacquer aswell, you just cant get a proper shine with rattle can lacquer, keep up the good work, theres nothing better than when a repair is finished and your looking at it and thinking that looks shit hot and i done it lol :p:D

hi,fellas i have read your comments with great amusement,i have been painting cars for nearly 30 years now,

i started with spitty cans and found i enjoyed it, same as you guys but in my day was minis and mk2 escorts.

went back to college took a city and guilds in paint and body repair, worked in numerous bodyshops some better than others,

in essenence you can get a good finish with a spitty can, however there is a vast difference between this and a professional job by a quaity paintshop,

a good painter these days is worth their weight in gold!!!!!!!

so to all out there proffesional or not keep up the good work, its always rewarding to sit back and admire your work.

so to all keep up the good work !!!!!

happy new year to all.

very old git.....

I came across this and thought I would just give a little update on the bumper.

The car did another 15k miles after the respray and despite it's rather low slung bumper it didn't suffer any stone chips at all.

This was the last picture before I broke the car for parts.

Mx54.jpg

It is definitely down to the lacquer that made it look so good..... well that and the countless hours sanding the bloddy thing .
