parksgt Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Snapped my crank on my forged engine what would cause this??? Quote
funny onion Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) Woah! What power and set up? Something quite catastrophic must've happened. Maybe the transmission locked up or a piston/rod jammed somehow. Have you took it apart and had a look at pistons rods flywheel etc?How were you driving at the time? Edited May 5, 2013 by funny onion Quote
parksgt Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 Flywheels fine everything is still good apart from one pauter rod? Crank was snapped in two prices just was runnin 220 bhp for the meanwhile Quote
Ricky@Race-Tech Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Would be easy to say with pictures to be honest. I'm guessing the crank wasn't balanced? Also has it got an aftermarket flywheel and more importantly pulley? Quote
TurboTobz Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Crank was lightened and balanced I believe, standard crank pulley, the one noticeable thing was pitting in the bearing shells although it hadn't damaged any of the crank, but I did find a length of sump sealant in the oil ways when I took the engine apart Quote
daniel_g Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Ive stripped a few failed engines due to excessive sealant application. Never known it to snap cranks though lol. Quote
parksgt Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 I dont think its the sump sealant at all not to snap the crank in two Quote
hughes21 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I was in the car when it snapped we won the race though dusted a kangoo 1.9 tdi Quote
TurboTobz Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) I'll upload some in a bit I haven't many good ones I'll take more soon. Strange though 4x good pistons barely even coked up, 3x immaculate pauter rods and one bent. It took off nearly a quarter of the block by fly area Edited May 5, 2013 by TurboTobz Quote
TurboTobz Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I don't think it was oil related either it was a pretty clean snap Quote
AdamB Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) Was it knife edged? I've heard of a similar story where the crank was lightened and it cracked/fractured. Edited May 5, 2013 by AdamB Quote
Matt1878 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Just sounds like it was slightly out of balance... It only takes a fraction of it out and it will snap... Getting the bottom end off and looking at it should make it a lot easier to diagnose the problem.. Sorry to hear this mate:( Quote
TurboTobz Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Was it knife edged? I've heard of a similar story where the crank was lightened and it cracked/fractured.No, looked to have been shaved on a lathe or something but I could be completely wrong, the little end of the one with bent rod and where the crank snapped feels tight but this could have been damaged at the time I don't know if it was seizing up or something that it stressed the crank Quote
glanzagee Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I've heard of one over here that was supposed to be running 450+ snap a crank more than once !Cause unknown ! Quote
Whitenoize Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Haha I wouldn't wanna snap my crank racing a kangoo tbh I wouldn't even waste the petrol Quote
hughes21 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Haha I wouldn't wanna snap my crank racing a kangoo tbh I wouldn't even waste the petrol[/quoteIt was a 1.9 tdi though mate Quote
TurboTobz Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Haha, it's been some pretty random things, I change it every now and then when I think of something funny lol. Quote
Flaminsam Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Damn! Thats snapped in a unusual place too. Has the crank been reground? Ive seen a couple of snapped cranks at work and they have sheared usually on or next to one of the mains. :-S Quote
